Twelve sixth form pupils have been awarded their RLSS UK National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ) which means that they are now fully qualified to work as Pool Lifeguards.

Lifeguarding at RHS

The NPLQ course comprises many hours of physical training and theoretical classroom work, followed by practical in-water and out-of-water assessment on pool rescue, first aid, CPR and lifesaving skills.

The qualification is internationally recognised and can provide

  • an amazing public service and life skill
  • opportunities to for holiday and GAP year jobs
  • a stepping stone to a career in the leisure industry
  • fitness and the opportunity to compete in lifeguard events e.g. National Pool Lifeguard Championships (team event) and the Lifeguard Triathlon

Well done to the following pupils:

Double Olympic medallist, David Davies, came to the Royal Hospital School on Friday 21 June to give pupils preparing for the Great East Swim a master class in open water swimming.

David Davies and RHS Open Water Swimmers.

Davies first swam competitively at the age of eight in his hometown of Barry, Vale of Glamorgan in Wales. From this he went on to swim in the Commonwealth Games for Great Britain in 2002 and to win the Bronze 1500m at the 2004 Athens Olympics. His highlight was winning the Silver 10km Marathon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics; a battle of endurance for even the strongest of swimmers as he battled with exhaustion and consciousness in his fight for the finish line.

After a few warm up drills with the RHS pupils, Davies went through techniques and tips for open water swimming including getting the students to practice spotting the buoy, swimming in close proximity to others and energy-saving methods for turning around the course.

Unfortunately the Great East Swim, originally planned for Saturday, was postponed due to expected poor weather conditions. The Royal Hospital School Swimming Coach, Emma Cook, who was also due to take part in the event said, “The 45 pupils who have been training incredibly hard for the Great East Swim found it hard to hide their disappointment today but I hope that the swimmers can now incorporate the techniques they learned into their training regimes which will give them that extra edge for competing once the race has been rescheduled. Thank you to David for his time in the pool and the expertise he shared.”

On Saturday 22 June, 45 pupils from the Royal Hospital School will take to the water in the Great East Swim at neighbouring Alton Water reservoir. This annual event attracts around 3,000 swimmers and involves either a 1/2 mile, 1 mile, 2 mile and 5k open water swim. The participants start in waves of 300 every half an hour to ensure a smoothly run event with the highest safety possible.

The pupils taking part have been training hard in the build up to the Great East Swim and are nearly ready to take on this personal challenge. On the day before the race two-time Olympic medallist, David Davies, will be giving them a master-class in the School pool providing some useful tips on distance and open water swimming.

David Davies is a Welsh Commonwealth Games and Olympic distance swimmer. Born in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Davies swam for Wales at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and represented Great Britain at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in the 1500m freestyle (Bronze Medallist) and at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the 1500m freestyle and the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim (Silver Medallist). He held the British Records in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle (Silver Medallist in 2008 European Championships). He also represented Great Britain again in the 1500m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

On Tuesday 21 May, just under 60 pupils took part in the RHS Bi-Athlon. There were two classes – Juniors (Year 7 to 9) and Seniors (Year 10 to 13) – completing a long-distance swim in the School pool followed by challenging cross-country course.

RHS_Bi-athlon

Examination commitments and cold blustery weather conditions did not hinder the participants who displayed sheer determination in their effort to cross the finish line. Medals were awarded to the top three finishers and new School records were broken by Sarah Murrison, winner of the Senior Girls’ race and Georgia Burge, winner of the Junior Girls’ race.

Involvement in one of the UK’s largest open water swimming events has grown year on year at RHS and there are currently fifty pupils training hard for the 1/2 mile, 1 mile and 2 mile races at neighbouring Alton Water Reservoir on 22 June.

2012 Swimmer, Great East Swim

Emily Davidson-Brett, Great East Swim 2012

The pupils, aged between 11 and 18 years, are being trained by expert swimming coach, Emma Cook, in two special sessions per week. Emma, who has herself taken part in the event said: “Pupils at the Royal Hospital School tend to be a pretty determined ‘bunch’ and in the past RHS have competed and won best team and top times in their age groups. After the Easter Holidays I am hoping that the weather improves and water temperatures rise so that we can practise in open water at Maldon Tri-Club. We have a strong squad of swimmers this year so I am expecting some excellent times and personal achievements”.

The Junior and Senior Swimming Galas were held last weekend. The Junior houses competed in their four mixed teams with the emphasis on participation and fun. Large numbers from both Blake and Drake took part in a really great event watched by the rest of the house and many parents.

RHS_Swimming

The Senior Gala for Years 9-13 took place on Sunday as a finals day for qualifiers of the heats held earlier in the week. There was a fantastic`turn out’ of supporters from all the houses.

Emma Cook, Swimming Teacher, said “19 School records were broken in the two Galas which is testament to the hard work that goes on in the pool and especially from those who attend swim training on a regular basis”.

RHS Dive to Victory

sport, success, swimming, the royal hospital school

RHS_SwimmingOn the Tuesday 5 March, the RHS Intermediate and Senior swimming squads travelled to Framlingham College to compete against the hosts and visiting team Gresham’s.

The Intermediate Girls started well with Arabella Murrison winning her Individual Medley race comfortably. Charlotte Heley also performed admirably winning her 40m Butterfly race in similar style.

The Intermediate Boys also fared well with the Ash brothers, Peter and Rob, leading the charge and winning their 40m events followed in quick succession by victories from Charlie Tedora in 40m Breaststroke and Alex Slatter in 40m Backstroke.

However, the plaudits must go to the Senior Boys’ and Girls’ teams who between them lost only one race. The Senior Girls’ team made up of Alexa Cox, Lauren Jones, Georgina Cheung, Flo Gould, Flick Slatter and Rebecca Anstey performed well. Alexa Cox won both her events with more than half a length to spare and Lauren Jones also swam very well to win the 80m Breastroke event. The Senior Girls also won both the Medley Relay and Freestyle Relay.

The Senior Boys’ team consisting of Sean Burgess, Josh Allday, Dan Jones and Cameron Cullen swam strongly as a unit winning their Freestyle relay with ease. A mention must also go to Sean Burgess in particular who pulled-off a tight victory against a strong Gresham’s swimmer in the 80m Butterfly. Dan Jones won his Breastroke race coming from behind in the last length to clinch another tight race.

RHS won the gala easily with 153 points. Framlingham came in second ahead of Gresham’s with 95 points. The squad won 23 out of a possible 28 events and showed great team spirit throughout.
