Sunday 24 November was a busy day for some of the Royal Hospital School’s top rugby players.
Kuki Daunakamakama, Cameron Jordan, Toyo Ogunlesi and Alex Oxley have all progressed to the next round of trials for Northampton Saints at U13 level and Zac Puckey has been selected for the Independent Schools Lambs squad at U14 level. Alex Rayment and Ben Kelland were selected at the U16 London Division trials which takes them a step further step towards an England U16 place. Alex and Ben have also been accepted into the Northampton Junior Academy for next season.
3 junior teams travelled to Greshams midweek. The U12s dominated Greshams in all aspects of the game winning 43-0. Prop Luke Clark-Smith and flanker Finn Corcoran playing well. The U13Bs had a tough outing and lost 40-0. In a tight well-fought game the U13As lost 17-5 against a very well drilled and hard tackling Greshams side.
On Saturday over half the boys in the School were playing representative rugby against Norwich.
At junior level, only the U13B side came close to beating powerful teams from Norwich. They drew 10-10 with Tom Brown playing very well.
The U14 sides both won at home in some style. The B team 29-12 and the A team 29-5.
Away, the U15B lost in a close game but the A team battled out a gritty victory 14-7, showing some great defensive structure and passion to deny Norwich.
The U16Bs drew 14-14 and the A team battled against adversity to lose by 8 in game to forget. The A team back-row were all awarded ‘men of the match’ and both teams left Norwich with heads held high.
Both the 2nds and the 3rds lost 10-5 as a result of missed chances and lack of precision at key times. A similar tale for the 1st XV against a very good Norwich side. Despite long periods of pressure, RHS could not unlock the Norwich defence and an interception try flattered the visitors. The final score was 17-6 to Norwich.
