The U13s lost their regional 3rd round ‘Jet Cup’ game at New Hall, Chelmsford, by just 16 runs. In a tight affair the Junior 1st XI started well with Cameron Jordan taking out two Essex batsmen. The ‘spin-twins’, Josh Frame and Fergus Atkins, continued the good work before New Hall accelerated to finish on 109 all out their 20 overs with part-time seamer Alex Oxley claiming a super 5 wicket haul. In reply our batsman started well before the run-out of Frame and New Hall’s bowlers started to apply pressure. Atkins batted steadily for 36 before he was bowled in the 16th over with still 30 needed. The U13s tried hard to get there but were restricted by some good New Hall straight bowling.

In the block fixtures against Woodbridge the U12s lost an important toss and were made to bat on a sticky wicket and slow outfield. Hamish Comonte and Harvey Crallen repaired the early damage with a 3rd wicket partnership of 41. Comonte eventually top scored with 24 in his team’s total of 76 all out against some good Woodbridge bowling. Despite a great start by our bowlers which resulted in the opposition being 20 for 3, our support bowlers were not strong enough to force a victory so they lost by 5 wickets.

The U13s defeated Woodbridge by 5 wkts with Josh Frame undefeated on 43 whilst Fergus Atkins made 45. Earlier having won the important toss, our bowlers put Woodbridge under pressure with some impressive bowling although the fielding was not as dynamic as usual.

The U14As also beat Woodbridge by 84 runs with Ben Arulampalam making 67. Arulampalam and Nick Paddon put on an impressive opening partnership especially as we lost the toss and had to bat. Paddon finally fell on 47 as the RHS posted 162 for 3 off their 25 overs. With the bowling shared around the U14s won convincingly by 82 runs.

The U14Bs thumped Woodbridge by 9 wickets at home. We bowled them out for 65 with the wickets shared between Elliott Rayment, Toby Ruffles, Toby Lee, Scott Taylor, Ollie Leggett and Jack Wheeler Brand. Whilst we lost Xavier Bull early for nought, Rayment and Ruffles positively set about chasing down 66. This victory was achieved in just 8 overs.

The U15s enjoyed a great victory over Woodbridge on Lord’s with Michael Cowdrey and Toby Allday splendidly putting on 169 for the first Wicket. Cowdrey went on to score his first RHS century with an undefeated 115. The U15s bowled them out for 62 with William Parmenter Stratta taking 4/16 and RHS won by 107 runs.

On Wednesday 11 June, Year 10 pupils made their annual pilgrimage to the Ypres and Somme battlefields. With over one hundred staff and pupils attending the trip, this is always a popular and memorable visit for the RHS community. Arriving on the Ypres Salient on Wednesday, three RHS pupils, Tom Heley, Toby Buckland and Anna Tindale, laid a wreath at the Menin Gate on behalf of the School at the Last Post Ceremony. This is always a moving event and the pupils drew many compliments on their drill, conduct and turnout at the ceremony.

Day 2 saw the trip visit the Somme region, touring the trench areas of Beaumont Hamel and the Sunken Road, as well as the mine craters at Hawthorn Ridge and Lochnagar. The opportunity to visit the Naval Division graves in Y Ravine cemetery reminded all pupils of the links RHS has to the Great War land battles. The museum at Albert provided a superb insight into the 1916 battle before the group ended the day at the imposing and thought-provoking Thiepval Memorial. Returning to the Ypres Salient on the final day, the pupils were given insights into gas warfare at Vancouver Corner, paid their respects at the German cemetery at Langemarck, toured the excellent Passchendaele Museum, and ended the tour with time for reflection at Tyne Cott cemetery.

Two glorious days of sunshine provided the backdrop to the RHS CCF field days at the end of the summer term.

The Royal Navy section were afloat on the School’s fleet of four Cornish Shrimpers and they also visited Chatham Historic Dockyard and conducted training in the local area. The RAF section visited RAF Hendon museum and took part in range work, laser quest tactical exercises and command and leadership training.

The Royal Marines and Army sections deployed to Stanford Training Area near Thetford for some intensive tactical training involving an overnight ambush. The arrival of a troop of Light Dragoons from Swanton Morley, caused much excitement on the second day. They were taking a break from their current operational training and the RHS cadets were able to clamber over four of their Jackal armoured fighting vehicles and in one of their Panther Command and Liaison Vehicles. The Squadron Commander was pleased to give the pupils an insight into the role and capability of the Light Dragoons.

enrichment week, IBM, Leon McCarron, RHS, royal hospital school, sixth form, the royal hospital school

Year 12 were treated to an exciting enrichment programme following their AS examinations at the end of the summer term. This included a UCAS convention and a variety of fascinating lectures culminating in a talk on life lessons learnt whilst crossing the Gobi desert by Leon McCarron.

Former pupils Natasha Green and Kate Harmer, both of whom are currently on a placement year with IBM, spoke about wider options post-RHS with IBM’s Dare to be Different programme. Angela Findlay gave a powerful lecture on WW2 perspectives from the German side: her grandfather was a highly decorated General in the Wehrmacht fighting on the Eastern Front and Angela tied in her own family connections with reflections on the way Germans have coped with the legacy of the war since 1945.

And, Leon McCarron took the enthralled audience 3000 miles on foot across the Gobi desert from the Mongolian border down to Hong Kong on the Pacific coast, describing the highs and lows of the journey alongside the life lessons which inevitably accompany such a trek.

Four Days to go until Mr Coleman starts his walk to Birmingham

24 Tuesday Jun 2014

RCDM Patient Welfare, royal hospital school, the royal hospital school

It is only four days to go until Mr Coleman embarks on his walk from RHS to the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine in Birmingham and nearly everything is prepared:

I have all the maps ready, a blister repair kit (although none so far in training), two funky pairs of walking trousers, loads of T-shirts thanks to Doug Frame (modelled by my tutees who are joining me on the first leg), B&Bs booked, groovy new boots that I think I’ve managed to break in just in time, and, most importantly, some awfully uncomfortable, unattractive compression stockings to try to prevent my leg going a strange orangey-red colour due to some persistent blood clots.

Dan Coleman

I’m a bit nervous. My longest practice was a 26-mile walk from Stowmarket back to school in half-term via the Gipping. It’s a beautiful walk for anyone who fancies it, but mind out for the bull roaming the path near Needham Market. My shortest full day once I get underway will be about 32 miles, as I follow the Stour to the Haverhill area. In fact, the training has opened my eyes to what a gorgeous part of the world we live in. I’ve stumbled across paths on the peninsula and along the Orwell and Stour I’ve never seen before.

Huge thanks must go to everyone in the school community who has pledged money to the Patient Welfare Fund. Parents, staff, pupils, friends and family have been extremely generous, and we look set to break the £2,000 target at https://www.justgiving.com/dancolemanrhs/

Thanks too (or the blame) must go to Brigadier Beaton for being the inspiration behind it and a hugely supportive force since, and Clive Rennison, whose support and organisational skills have more than made up for my deficiencies in this area.

Mr Coleman plans to get to Birmingham on 4July at around 4pm but this is just a rough estimate. Follow this blog to find out how he is getting on. If you would like to make a donation to the RCMD Patient Welfare Fund, please go to https://www.justgiving.com/dancolemanrhs/

Back in January this year, Nick Sims and Tom Ponsonby, both in Year 8, decided to organise a sponsored run; they wanted to raise money for Cancer Research UK in memory of close members of their family, who they lost to cancer two years ago.

Four of their friends, all of whom know someone affected by the disease, wanted to support their friends in raising money for this good cause; so Conor Davies, Tolly Young, Zaccary Frankham and Adam Warren joined Tom and Nick making sponsor sheets, designing t-shirts and spreading news of their project throughout the school community.

On Wednesday 15January, the six boys set off on a 7.5km run in the School grounds, on a route they planned themselves. All completed the course in their allocated time and then set about collecting the money which had been pledged. The boys were particularly delighted to receive a cheque for £500 from Helping Hand, the BT Staff Charity Fund in Ipswich, who read about the event in the East Anglian Daily Times and wanted to contribute to this worthy cause.

A total of £1331 was raised; a huge achievement for the boys and a testament to their hard work and dedication. Mr Tom Bamford from the Cancer Research UK Fundraising Committee came to the Royal Hospital School this morning to receive the cheque from the boys.

Today, two days before they take part in the Great East Swim, RHS pupils and staff from proudly receive their Team T-shirts from this year’s sponsor, popular American-Italian restaurant chain, Frankie & Benny’s (part of The Restaurant Group).

Adam Lamb, Marketing Coordinator for The Restaurant Group, said, “F&B’s is delighted to be supporting the Royal Hospital School Swim Team. This group of young people have shown tremendous commitment and I wish them the best of luck in this commendable personal challenge.”

On Saturday 21 June, more than 30 members of the Royal Hospital School community will take to the water in the Great East Swim at neighbouring Alton Water reservoir.  This annual event attracts around 3,000 swimmers and involves either a 1/2 mile, 1 mile, 2 mile or 5k open water swim. It is part of the Great Swim Series which has five events across England and Scotland attracting in the region of 22,000 participants.

The Royal Hospital School pupils, aged between 13 and 18 years, have been training hard in the build up to the Great East Swim and are now ready to take the challenge. Swimming Coach, Emma Cook, who is also taking part in the event said: “Pupils at RHS tend to be a pretty determined ‘bunch’ and in the past RHS have competed and won best team and top times in their age groups. We have a strong squad of swimmers this year so I am expecting some excellent times and personal achievements”.

On Saturday 17 May the Royal Hospital School Equestrian Team of Chloe Tribe (Captain), Milly Ainsworth and Rose Arbuthnot awoke at 5am to prepare for Her Majesty’s Services Team Jumping competition at the Royal Windsor Horse Show. With everyone helping out, including the Inter-School riders competing later in the day, the team looked very smart and ready to go. The three riders were competing as a Services (CCF) Team against adult riders from the Army, Navy, RAF, Police, Household Cavalry and other services. Chloe entered the main Castle Arena first and had a beautiful ride over a difficult and highly competitive course with just one pole down. Milly (pictured below) also had a brilliant ride with one pole down. Rose and her horse flew over the first but, after knocking an injury from earlier in the week, the horse was in pain and Rose unfortunately had a fall.

The Inter Schools team of four entered another arena to face another difficult course. Lucy Watson had a good round with just two poles down. Amelia Keitley Webb rode very well but had a nasty fall towards the end. Sally Watson followed with a challenging ride and an unlucky fall at the last. Finally, Eliza Tribe, in Year 7 and sister of Chloe, flew round for a perfect clear round.

Later in the day, the Services Team prepared for the Parade of Services riding three abreast and saluting Her Majesty the Queen as they passed. This involves riding one handed in a crowded arena with nerves on edge, but the team were impeccable; smartly turned out with very well behaved horses.

Sevices Team 2014 4

There were no prizes this year but it was an incredible experience for all involved. A huge thank you must go to the parents and staff that made this competition possible and especially team trainer, Caroline Colwill.
