On Sunday 8 June Peter Crompton will be returning to the Royal Hospital School to perform in the final Organ Recital of the current series.

Peter, Organist Emeritus and former Director of Music at RHS, worked at the School for almost 40 years before retiring last summer. No one knows the keys of the Grand Organ better, making this a concert one not to be missed! You can expect dazzling displays of organ management during the programme of popular organ greats.

The recital will begin at 7.30pm in the School Chapel. Admission is free (with a retiring collection) so no need to book. For more information please contact the Music School on 01473 326222 or email music@royalhospitalschool.org

A Fabulous Medley of Choirs at the RHS Choirs’ Concert

On the evening of Saturday 29 March the combined vocal forces of the Royal Hospital School assembled in the Chapel for the first Choirs’ Concert of its kind, featuring not only the Chapel Choir but also the Show Choir, Chamber Choir and Barbershop Group. The evening, which was masterfully compèred by Head of Singing Dominic Peckham, began with a spellbinding performance of Dobrinka Tabakova’s highly atmospheric anthem Praise, sung from the organ loft by the Chapel Choir and conducted by William Saunders, Director of Music. The audience were seated in the east end of Chapel facing the back, an innovation that enabled much greater communication between them and the Choir. The first half continued with a mix of newer music and some sacred choral classics, including Howard Goodall’s much loved setting of Psalm 23 and CV Stanford’s vigorous Ye Choirs of New Jerusalem, and there were most impressive solo performances from Taylor Godfrey (soprano) and Ben Banks (organ). The Choir sounded really superb in their new location and it was a joy to hear the fabulous colours of our Grand Organ used to accompany them.

The Show Choir, led by Assistant Director of Music Alice Reidy, opened the second half of the concert with a rousing rendition of Pharell Williams’ Happy‘ from the front of Chapel. The lighter, secular atmosphere continued with the triumphant appearance of the Barbershop Group, directed by Christian White, Head of Sixth Form, singing two close harmony classics with great accuracy, style and panache. The highlight for many, however, will have been the performance of the Chamber Choir, conducted by Alice Reidy, who sang two extremely poignant pieces of music: Benjamin Britten’s Hymn to the Virgin and the late Sir John Tavener’s The Lamb, the latter favourite proving especially moving in light of the composer’s recent death. Both of these are technically and musically testing and the Choir rose to the challenge with sensitivity and aplomb. Dominic Peckham then took charge; first leading the Chamber Choir in an exquisitely expressive interpretation of Byrd’s Ave Verum Corpus and then, in perhaps the climax of the evening, bringing all the performers and audience to their feet in a thrilling “mash-up” of Pink Floyd’s Another Brick in the Wall and Queen’s I want it all, among others. To close the concert with all who had participated, both performers and audience, joining together in song was a joyous end to a wonderful evening.

First Jam Night A Roaring Success

On Sunday 9 February, after a hugely successful Scholars’ Concert the preceding evening, crowds thronged once again to the Burns Recital Hall, this time to a Jam Night organised and run by our own in-house songster legend Tom Craggs-Ward.

George's feet

This event saw several talented pupils (and Mr Hodges in a startling and moving cameo appearance) given the chance to perform in a relaxed, non-classical context. There were well-received contributions from the Year 9 band White Flag, Andrew Egan and his band, Holly Bird in a virtuosic cup solo and George Rennison. It would be fair, however, to say that the twin highlights of the evening were the closing performances by Tom Craggs-Ward’s alter ego, the marvellous Tom Layer, and Tom McConnell, son of the School Chaplain, who is currently touring the UK. Both of these young singer/songwriters showed themselves at the top of their game, using loop pedals to ingenious effect and eliciting ecstatic responses from the large audience.

The evening was all the more remarkable for being entirely student-run, and Tom deserves tremendous praise for putting on such a slick and entertaining a show. Thanks also must go to Alex Crawford-Ewart for his assistance with sound. We hope that this will be the first of many such events and look forward to the next!

The IMU Big Band will be performing in the Jellicoe Room at the Royal Hospital School on Sunday 24 November at 7pm.

IMU Big Band Jazz Night at RHS

The IMU Big Band was originally formed over 30 years ago to allow local musicians to play ‘Bug Band Jazz’ for their own pleasure. They have been one of the leading Big Bands in East Anglia for many years.

Their repertoire ranges from Big Band classics through to more contemporary arrangements by Chick Corea, Sammy Nestico, Gordon Goodwin and Maynard Ferguson, to name but a few. For the last 20 years they have been directed by David Bolton, a local trumpet player, music teacher and musical director. His is always grateful and appreciative of the excellent musicianship and dedication from the musicians within the band.

The concert will be held in the Jellicoe Room in the Main School and will include a buffet, a glass of wine and a complimentary programme within the ticket price.

Tickets cost £15 (concessions: £10 and under 18s: free) and can be purchased through the Ipswich Regent Box Office on 01473 433100 or by visiting www.ipswichregent.com.

On the Sunday 16 June, some 150 choristers rehearsed for a performance of Faure’s Requiem in the School chapel. The performance also included pieces by the composer’s Cantique de Jean Racine and Pavane played on the organ by William Saunders. The choir included former choristers of the Royal Hospital School Chapel Choir and former and present members of the Holbrook Choral Society. It was directed by Peter Crompton with William Saunders at the organ and a considerable sum of money was raised for the Chapel Choir Tour of Northern Germany which takes place at the end of the summer term.

The Holbrook Choral Society Summer Concert “From West End to Broadway” proved to be a roaring success as they performed to a large audience in the chapel at the Royal Hospital School on Saturday evening.

The concert was given by Holbrook Choral Society and orchestra with the Chamber Choir and soloists from the Royal Hospital School. The works performed included music from Les Miserables, the Rhythm of Life from Sweet Charity and Errol Garners famous tune “Misty” performed by Jessica Hazelton, soprano, with Elizabeth Ponsonby on the saxophone. Elizabeth Leaver and Jack Rickards also performed “All I ask of You” from the Phantom of the Opera by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

William Saunders played an organ arrangement entitled “The Sound of Musicals” by Nicholas Freestone showing off the schools famous organ in a different genre.  All of this was interspersed with great opera choruses and arias performed by the Holbrook Choral Society with Teresa Pells, soprano soloist.  The large orchestra which had been assembled performed Broadway show stoppers including “That’s Entertainment”, “Cabaret”, “Mame” and “There’s no business like show business.” Towards the end of the concert the audience was treated to “Sunrise, Sunset” from Fiddler on the Roof and an appropriate rendition of “Singing in the Rain”.

The Concert concluded with an impromptu performance by Peter Crompton of “This is the Moment” from the musical Jekyll and Hyde. It was a fitting, and stunning, ‘Swan song’ at Peter’s last concert as Director of Music at the Royal Hospital School before he retires at the end of this term. Peter, the choirs, orchestra and soloists received a well-deserved standing ovation.
