This week Crompton Organ Scholar, Oliver Morris, plays a classic piece on the Grand Organ.

Toccata in D minor, by JS Bach, is one of the most famous works in the organ repertoire. It has been used in film, video games, rock music and ringtones. One of the most famous adaptations of the piece was for the 1962 version of ‘The Phantom of the Opera’.

William Saunders, our new charismatic Head of Academic Music and renowned international recitalist, will be giving an organ recital entitled Rule Britannia! in the Chapel on Saturday 6 October at 7.30pm. All are welcome.

Prior to taking up his position at RHS, William was Assistant Director of Music at Ipswich School and is the brain child behind the Annual Festival of Music in Ipswich. He has an extensive organ recital programme which has recently taken him to Westminster Abbey, Wells Cathedral and St Paul’s. He tours in Europe and also conducts the Prometheus Singers who regularly sing in St Pauls Cathedral.

This recital will take place in the School’s cathedral-proportioned Chapel with video relay from the organ console so that you can really see his expert hands at work.

It was with a deep feeling of sadness that I heard of the news of Carlo’s passing. I had known Carlo for some thirty years and we have kept in touch over this period of time. I first met him in the chapel of the Royal Hospital School when Michael Woodward brought him over to try the wonderful organ, an instrument he loved playing on his many visits to give recitals. He regarded it very highly and described the organ as one of the finest examples of English organ building in the country. This first meeting ignited a long lasting friendship and association.

I was immediately struck by his warm and generous personality as well as his sheer musical brilliance. He had a wonderful sense of humour as I can testify during many long and hilarious conversations we had over the telephone. Carlo certainly enjoyed communicating with people in the most engaging manner. He transfered this gift to the concert hall where he was able to hold thousands of his appreciative listeners in the palm of his hand.

I had the pleasure of listening to many great recitals both here and elsewhere and also experienced the privilege of performing duets with him on numerous occasions. The world has lost one of the truly great organists, entertainers and communicators of all time. Carlo will be greatly missed by all of us.
