Tuesday 18 March Senior Fixtures v New Hall

1st V11 v New Hall (L 32-27) The first quarter was a disaster for the RHS team as they let New Hall establish a comfortable easy rhythm without offering any opposition. RHS then turned the game around and became more competitive throughout, particularly with Sonia Lei dominating in the centre and Emily Davidson Brett marking her shooter out of the game. RHS won the second quarter 9 goals to 6 and then drew in the third quarter 5 goals each still however, leaving the score adrift 23-18. The final quarter saw New Hall return their GA to her dominating position, strengthening their attacking position. Despite drawing in goals again, RHS were unable to take any turn overs and could not make up the deficit from the first quarter. Players of the match were Sonia Lei and Arabella Murrison.

2nd V11 v New Hall (W 28-13) RHS had a strong start against New Hall and after the quarter were leading 6-1. This was due to accurate shooting from both Anna Wynn and Annabelle Sweeney. The second quarter saw New Hall step up their intensity and start to close the score line. RHS responded to this and dominated the second half. Defenders Charlotte Heley and Abi Sweeney worked hard to make interceptions for their team and the shooters rewarded this by scoring. The final quarter saw RHS pull ahead even further with great movement from the midcourt this made RHS’s job easier. Final score 28-13.

Wednesday 19 March Junior Fixtures v Norwich

U13A v Norwich (L 16-21) The U13A team had a well contested game against Norwich however did not remain consistent throughout. Despite a great effort in the defensive end from Annie Tavainavesi and Libby Parker it was not going to be RHS’s day. With moments of excellence followed by dips of poor passing RHS could not take the lead against a well drilled Norwich side. George Nicholls slotted into the attacking end nicely and showed great improvements throughout the game which is a positive sign on building a strong U13 squad. Player of the match was Libby Parker

U13B v Norwich (L 8-20) The team started the match strong and were only 2—1 down after the first quarter. Again in the second quarter, the score was 4—3, making the half time score 6—4 to Norwich. Molly Williamson stepped up to the mark as wing attack and played well during the first half, alongside Molly Irving as center. Shooter, Beth Carnell, soldiered on despite a sore finger but Norwich ran away with the game during the second half. The final score was 20—8. Player of the match was Shennise Robertson for her determination throughout the entire match.

U12A v Norwich (L 12-6) The team started slowly despite having home advantage and by the end of the first quarter Norwich were 6-1 ahead. RHS started to play their own game of netball in the second, dictating the play themselves instead of following Norwich. The defence worked very hard with Freya Guckian and Ruby Parker working a back line pass very well. The score at the end of this quarter was 8-2 to Norwich. Then the RHS attack improved with Charlotte Stenning making a number of good interceptions to turn the ball around. Mollie Entwistle and Rebecca Sweeney used the space sensibly to get the ball to the ‘D’. Eliza Tribe and Yasmin Gradwick- Light were then left to finish off the work of the ball being brought through the court. They kept level with Norwich so that the last 2 quarters were draws 2 goals apiece but it still left a deficit. Overall the team worked well but the percentage of shots on target needs to be higher and consistent and this only comes with practice.

U12B v Norwich (L 15-7) The game got off to a very competitive start with both teams making lots of interceptions. Some fantastic work between Lucia Soler at WA and Amelia Anderson at GA allowed RHS to score the first goal of the game. However, RHS struggled to intercept the ball against the tall Norwich shooters and so the score at quarter time was 5-2. The second quarter was better for RHS, Katy Bagnall at GK and Alice Clayton at GD made plenty of interceptions which allowed Morgan Thomas to score some very impressive mid-range shots, and the score at half time was 6-4 to Norwich. In the third quarter, RHS let their nerves get the better of them and they made lots of unforced errors which allowed Norwich to further their lead. However, in the last quarter RHS managed to compose themselves and Lily Mason made some fantastic interceptions at WD. Izzy Butler was patient with the ball and fed the shooting circle well but unfortunately RHS could not catch up with Norwich and the final score was 15-7. Player of the match was awarded to Lucia for her excellent work at WA.

U12C v Norwich (D 7-7) The U12C team played a good game despite their relative lack of match experience. Although the game was low scoring the centre court players had an extremely busy game. They drew 7-7 against a well matched opposition. Players of the match were Immy Pearson and Esmé Peters.

Thursday 20 March U15B & C v St Felix

U15B V Saint Felix (L 11-18) The U15Bs had a tough game against Saint Felix. In the first quarter, the girls found it hard to keep up in the defending end however in the second quarter the girls came back with a better result. Great play from Hannah Southerton and Olivia Jones helped a great deal in bringing the ball through court. Some great shooting from Sammi Chiu meant that RHS contested until the final whistle. Player of the match was Olivia Jones

U15C v St Felix B (L 13-8) A disappointing match for RHS who had opportunities to take control of the game but squandered them. Movement of the ball through the court was very erratic and there was no rhythm to the game which allowed St Felix to take their chances and convert the goals. Ellie Rowe had a good game in defence and was named player of the match

Saturday 22 March Fixtures v Bishops Stortford

1st V11 v Bishops Stortford (L 32-24) The first team had their penultimate match of the season at home against Bishops Stortford College. RHS had a slow start to the game, allowing the opposing team to pull away quickly in the first quarter. There were periods of good play when RHS looked as though they would pull back on the early deficit, but errors allowed the opposition to creep further ahead and win the quarter 12-6. The second quarter saw a much more determined RHS defence, with Hannah Garlick making several interceptions and Amy Arana-Wade tracking her player well through the centre court. RHS had some excellent periods of play in attack in this quarter and held Bishops Stortford to a 6 all draw. However, shooting opportunities were missed and too many errors were made by RHS when they lost composure bringing the ball through court. Half time saw some changes with Floz Vivian coming in to the GA position and Tash Jones coming on at WD. Tash made an impact in defence, restricting the play of the skilled Bishop Stortford WA and Hannah Garlick continued to turn the ball over, allowing RHS to draw this quarter seven goals apiece. Sadly the final quarter saw Bishops Stortford pull further ahead as RHS could not match them for shooting opportunities or accuracy. Despite the disappointing final score line of 34-24, RHS can be pleased with some good periods of play. Player of the Match was Hannah Garlick

2nd V11 V Bishops Stortford (L 17-22) The Seconds had a competitive match against a strong Bishops Stortford side and with an instant interception from Izzy Dixon, RHS took the lead. RHS dominated in the first quarter and won 7-5 but Bishops Stortford came out fighting and, with some quick movement in their circle, started to pull back. Despite some superb interceptions from Abi Sweeney, RHS could not convert the goals and at half time it was 11-11. Although RHS had some great play in their attacking end from Hattie Botwright, with some well-timed drives into space, RHS could not maintain their lead. A good performance from the team, but a lack in consistency led to a final score of 17-22. Hattie Botwright was player of the match.

3rd V11 v Bishops Stortford (L6-38) The 3rd team faced tough opposition with passing that continually kept RHS on the defensive. There were completely dominated by a much stronger Stortford team. Lucy Bradley at WA was player of the match for quick, agile movement and fast breaks from the centre passes.

U15A V11 v Bishops Stortford (L 37-18) The first quarter of this game was very competitive with both teams scoring early on. The attack applied great defensive pressure which enabled plenty of through court turnovers and, as a result, RHS went 4-1 up. Bishops Stortford had a very fast style of play which RHS defence struggled to control and so, unfortunately, at quarter time the score was 7-5 to Bishops Stortford. In the second and third quarters, RHS struggled to keep up with the fast and physical opposition. Despite some great shooting by Anna Khan and Millie Orr, along with some great attacking play by Sophie Rennison and Cass Peacock, RHS were down at three quarter time 28-11. The last quarter was much better with Charlene Tait at GK and Milly Ainsworth at GD taking many interceptions off the Bishops Stortford shooters which allowed RHS to score the first 3 goals of the quarter. Sophie Atkinson played well at WD but it was a case of ‘too little too late’ and the final score was 37-18. Player of the match was awarded to Anna Khan for her fantastic shooting and Millie Orr for her tireless work at GA.

U15B V11 v Bishops Stortford (L 34-3) Player of the match Hannah Southerton

U15C V11 v Bishops Stortford (L 24-4) Player of the match Hope Moonan

U14A V11 v Bishops Stortford (L 24-10) Players of the match Serena Brown and Amelia Keitley-Webb

U14B V11 v B. Stortford (L 25-13) Players of the match Auriol Symons and Tabitha Saunders

U14C V11 v B. Stortford (L 18-3) Players of the match Georgina Folkard–Smith and Georgina Abalone

Juniors V Culford (Won)
RHS played Culford on Wednesday and managed two successful score lines. The U13C and U12B teams both won their games with well fought out play through the court. Molly Williamson and Lily Mason were players of the match. Both teams saw new players take to the court for the first time including; Jess Dixon, Rosie George, Evie Jacobs, Olivia King, Marta Perez-Marsa, Lucy Wong and Nuria Ramo Pascual.

U13B v Culford (Lost)
The U13B team also had a good game of netball against Culford but could not stay with them throughout the game and unfortunately suffered a loss by 6 goals. However, Emily Fretwell and Morgan Thompson both had good performances.

U12A v Culford (Lost)
The U12A team had a tough match against Culford and it was Eliza Tribe who kept them in the game for the first half with lovely movement through court and accurate shooting. However during the second half the team struggled to reach the shooting circle and could not stay in the game. Despite a loss, the team showed moments of promise which is positive to take into the next game.

2VII v Ipswich School U16A (Won 19-18)
RHS had a strong quick start against Ipswich and instantly took the lead. Defenders Abi Sweeney, Simone Rossouw and Charlotte Heley prevented Ipswich from scoring too many goals and allowed RHS to have the majority of play. However, Ipswich were not going to give up and put more pressure on in the third quarter. As RHS struggled to control the speed of the game, Ipswich pulled it back to a draw. With only one quarter to go RHS needed to step up their performance and improve their accuracy of passing. The final quarter saw better movement around the circle from Hattie Botwright and Beth Richardson, opening up the space for shooters Anna Wynn and Annabelle Sweeney. A well fought out quarter saw RHS win 19-18. Player of the match went to Abi Sweeney.

U15A V Ipswich School (Lost 11-28)
On Saturday a depleted U15A RHS side took on Ipswich School. The first quarter was excellent for RHS and as a result of some accurate shooting by Millie Orr and Anna Khan, RHS went 4-1 up in the first 5 minutes. Ipswich eventually settled and there were some great displays of netball by both sides, However, the score was 7-5 to Ipswich at quarter time. Cass Peacock went to GK in the second quarter and Izzy Dixon came out to WD and these changes had an immediate impact with both taking plenty of interceptions. However, RHS struggled to pass around the strong second stage defence by Ipswich and so at half time RHS were 7-15 down. The third quarter saw even more changes, Cass moved out to GD, Izzy went to GK, Olivia Jones came on at WA and Sophie Atkinson to WD. Despite some of the girls playing out of position, RHS showed some great passages of play with everyone working tirelessly throughout court. Unfortunately RHS struggled to keep up with a well-drilled Ipswich side in both the third and fourth quarter and the final result was 28-11 to Ipswich. Player of the match was awarded to both Sophie Rennison for her excellent play at C and Cass Peacock for playing well regardless of what position she was playing!

U15A v Langley (Lost 22-15)
On Tuesday, RHS U15A played Langley. The game got off to a very tense start with both teams going goal for goal. Nerves got the better of both teams and as a result, lots of balls were thrown off the sidelines. The score at quarter time was 7-5 to Langley. Going into the second quarter RHS were determined to catch up with Langley, Millie Orr and Anna Khan shot accurately and Cass Peacock fed the shooting circle well however, at half time RHS were still 2 goals down. The third quarter was very much a defensive one, with both teams taking plenty of interceptions. As a result of such hard work defensively the quarter score was only 3-2 to RHS. Charlene Tait, Milly Ainsworth and Sophie Atkinson worked tirelessly and took well over 10 interceptions, however, RHS struggled to bring the ball down through court. Going into the last quarter all was to play for. However, RHS let nerves get the better of them and Langley scored the first 3 goals early on which RHS were playing catch up throughout. The score at full time was 22-15 to Langley and player of the match was awarded to Cass Peacock for her excellent work rate and accurate feeding at WA.

U15B V Langley (Draw 12-12)
The U15B team had a tough start against Langley and were trailing from the outset. Despite a fast paced first three quarters RHS kept their focus and went into the last quarter far more determined. With a five goal deficit RHS had a lot of work to do, however RHS took on the challenge. The defenders prevented Langley from scoring a single goal and Sammi Chiu played strongly up front. A well fought performance saw RHS draw 12-12 and Sammi Chiu got player of the match.

On Friday 7 March the Royal Hospital School, Holbrook, welcomed U11 players from throughout Suffolk and Norfolk for a Festival of Netball.

U11 NETBALL ACTION

It all came down to the very last round of matches with four teams vying for the winning title in a wonderfully exciting tournament. After six rounds of excellent and competitive netball in the Spring sunshine, Moreton Hall A team’s seventh and final match was against Ipswich High A, while Finborough played Old Buckenham Hall. Old Buckenham eventually lost a very tight and thrilling match 3-4 and were awarded 4th place.

For the neutral spectators Court Two was the place to be, as Ipswich High A took the early advantage scoring two goals before Moreton Hall mounted a brave rescue act as this tense game finally finished in a brilliant 4-4 draw. The draw was enough for Moreton Hall A to be declared champions on points scored. Ipswich High A finished on level points with Finborough, but they scored two more goals over the seven matches putting them in 2nd place and Finborough a creditable 3rd.

Notre Dame from Norwich and Stoke College finished on the same 13 points but Notre Dame scored one more goal more than Stoke to claim 6th place. Their exciting 3-3 draw in the morning was another highlight of the day.

Points Table

Moreton Hall A          31

Ipswich High A          29

Finborough               29

Old Buckenham Hall  27

Ipswich High B          19

Notre Dame              13

Organiser of the event and Sports Development Manager at the Royal Hospital School, Don Topley, said “The top four sides could have easily beaten each other on any given day but many congratulations must go to the winners of the Festival, Moreton Hall, who played with great determination, skill and commitment to have a wholly undefeated tournament”.

Netball-RHS-3

The U13s took part in the South Suffolk Schools Netball Tournament  on Thursday where they played six competitive matches. RHS played Ipswich School B team first and had a convincing win of 12-0. Some excellent shooting from Beth Carnell secured the final score. RHS played St Albans in the second round and again had a strong win of 10-0. Excellent play by George Nicholls and Emily Fretwell bringing the ball through court assisted RHS in the score line. RHS played a very good defensive game against Farlingaye, with Annie Tavainavesi and Libby Parker keeping their shooters from scoring any more than two goals. Annie Paddon linked in well with shooters Holly Folkard-Smith and Tilly Arulampalam to make the final score 12-2.

The final three rounds of the tournament were going to be the toughest. RHS had to play against a well-drilled Woodbridge side but the team did not collapse under the pressure. Consistent play from Millie Salter and Tor Williams allowed the team to stay in control of the game and finish with a final score of 8-2. RHS then faced Ipswich School A team who had played well in the tournament so far. Annie Tavainavesi worked hard at GK to put pressure on the shooters, restricting them to only scoring 3 goals. Tilly Arulampalam shot well from all ranges and RHS secured a win of 8-3. The final game was against Ipswich High School. Having lost to them in a match the previous week the team knew it would be a tough game. RHS started strong and Libby Parker took an interception which was converted and put RHS in the lead. Beth Carnell and George Nicholls played in the second half of the game and delivered a solid performance playing quick netball that Ipswich High could not keep up with. Solid shooting from Beth saw the final score end 8-4.

After an excellent afternoon of netball the girls were announced winners of the South Suffolk Schools Netball Tournament. Well done to all players involved.

2VII v St Felix  W 23-8

The seconds had an excellent team performance against St Felix on Tuesday and were able to secure a good win. They started well in the first quarter with all players linking together down court. Anna Wynn dominated in the shooting circle which allowed RHS to take an early lead 7-2. It was the second quarter where RHS really pushed forward. Annabelle Sweeney found her timing in attack making it easy for Beth Richardson and Hattie Botwright to feed the ball in to the circle. RHS defence had a great quarter, restraining St Felix to only scoring 1 goal. At half time Kathy Brown stepped on court into the GK position, despite a nervous start she settled in well by the end of the game. Working with defenders Abi Sweeney and Charlotte Heley; they all managed to take lots of interceptions in the defending third. Simone Rossouw and Izzy Dixon also had good performances at C and WD and playing a pivotal role in linking the play together. Player of the match went to Anna Wynn.

3rd v St Felix W 18-5

The thirds also had a good game against St Felix which started at 3-3 in the first quarter with all to play for! In the second quarter Lauren Guy played well with Flo Hales in the D and the latter found her shooting streak! From then on RHS ran away with it to finish 18-5. Player of the match was Flo Hales.

1st V11–v King’s Ely  W 26- 24

The 1st team made an excellent start to the match against King’s Ely, dominating both in attack and defence, and drawing ahead to a 7-3 lead at quarter time.  In defence, Emily Davidson Brett and Hannah Garlick worked well together to make several interceptions and some good play in attack saw successful feeds into the circle giving RHS opportunities to score.  King’s Ely rallied during the break and this, together with several changes in the RHS line up, meant that they started the second quarter strongly.  RHS continued to play well and extended their lead so that the score was 16-10 at half time.  King’s Ely continued to improve their play, whilst RHS struggled to maintain momentum during the second half with their error rate increasing. This led to an exciting final quarter with Ely closing the gap to within one goal.  RHS dug in the final minutes to stop the Ely comeback, holding on to the lead and ending the game victorious. Player of the match was Josie Falk.

2VII v Kings Ely L 9-35

The second team had a slow start against Kings Ely and the girls struggled to settle into the game. Kings Ely dominated RHS from the outset and defenders Abi Sweeney and Kathy Brown had a hard job in restricting their shooting opportunities. Despite this, RHS took every opportunity to rebound under the post and give their team a chance to work the ball down in to their attacking end. Some quick passing between Beth Richardson, Hattie Botwright and Simone Rossouw saw RHS bring the ball through the court smoothly on occasions, but moving the ball round the circle edge to feed the shooters was more of a challenge. When given the chance, shooters Anna Wynn and Annabelle Sweeney did convert some goals under the post but it was not enough to keep RHS in the game. With their error rate too high, RHS could not catch a strong Kings Ely side. Final score 9-35. Player of the match went to Simone Rossouw.

3rd VII v King’s Ely 2ndVII L 36-6

The 3rds drew the short straw; playing inside on the nicest afternoon of the season so far and were then beaten by an overall better side. The awful score line does not reflect the determination and effort the RHS team put into their match. Stirling play in particular from Emma Stuart-Thompson who held the attack score line in the beginning however, as mistakes crept in from all sources, the ball was all too often lost allowing Ely to regain possession.

U15A  v King’s Ely L 21-5

On Thursday the U15A team faced Kings Ely. There were slight changes to the team due to the injury of GS Anna Khan but Ruth Brown stepped up to fill the role. The game got off to a quick start and RHS scored the opening goal of the game. However, a few turnovers by Ely, as a result of RHS inaccurate passing, meant they scored a few unanswered goals and the score at quarter time was 7-1. The second quarter followed a similar pattern for RHS, despite some excellent passages of play whilst bringing the ball through court. The tall Ely defence intercepted the ball as it came into the attacking circle. The third quarter was better for RHS; there was some excellent work between Sophie Rennison, Cass Peacock and Millie Orr, meaning RHS were able to score 3 goals. Going into the last quarter RHS knew they would have to work really hard in order to reduce Ely’s lead. Charlene Tait at GK made it hard for the Ely shooters by intercepting the ball with what seemed like ease! Sophie Atkinson and Millie Ainsworth also worked hard in defence but unfortunately it was a case of ‘too little too late’.  The final score was 21-5 to Ely and Charlene Tait was awarded player of the match for her outstanding defending.

U15B v Kings Ely L 7-26

RHS took time to adjust to the Kings Ely style of play and found themselves chasing from the outset. RHS were not, however, going to let them win easily and fought throughout the whole game to work the ball down court to the shooters. Excellent attacking play from Sammi Chui around the circle edge opened up the play for RHS allowing them to get some goals onto the scoreboard. RHS worked hard with the right attitude which was really pleasing to see against such tough opposition. Player of the match went to Britney Shrestha for her hard work in defence.

U14A v King’s Ely L 32-9

After a disappointing first quarter, the U14As upped their level, playing a much more competitive game. During the remaining quarters RHS worked hard to maximise scoring opportunities, resulting in two drawn quarters. Although they lost the match, they should be pleased with their comeback. Jorgyella Thorpe was player of the match for both her defensive and attacking play.

U14B v King’s Ely W 11-10

Captained by Auriol Symons, the U14Bs played an exciting game of netball against Kings Ely. Having gone down in the first quarter, the girls fought hard and displayed some great defensive play, winning 11-10. Players of the match were Beth Dwerryhouse for some great defensive play and Holly Parsons Atkinson for her determined attacking efforts.

U14C v King’s Ely L 14-11

The game against Kings Ely got off to a very tense start; RHS had intercepted their centre pass and thanks to a great shot by Carla Mini, they were one goal up. It took RHS a while to settle to King Ely’s fast play but the girls defended well down court. At quarter time RHS were 3 down. Ely came out fighting in the second half and both teams displayed some excellent netball. However, despite some fantastic through court work by Saffy Henley, Sara Benavent Marti and Georgia Alabone, RHS were 6 goals down. Changes were made ; Helena Miralles to WA and the second half was a different story for RHS, Georgia Folkard-Smith made numerous interceptions at GK and there was some very creative attacking play between Carla Mini and Molly Freeman meaning that going into the last quarter RHS were back to 3 goals behind. Unfortunately, RHS made too many unforced errors and the last quarter was a draw meaning the final score was 14-11. Player of the match was awarded to Carla Mini for her excellent attacking play and positivity and also to Holly Folkard-Smith for making so many interceptions at GK.

U13A v New Hall L 10-30

RHS had a slow start against New Hall and were behind from the outset. Unfortunately the attack could not link together the timing of their moves with the delivery of the pass and this lead to a very disrupted start for the team. However, a better second quarter saw RHS find their rhythm. Defenders Annie Tavainavesi and Libby Parker worked hard to restrict New Hall’s space in the circle and take the interceptions where they could. This allowed the team more possession of the ball and more opportunities on goal. Tilly Arulampalam and Holly Folkard-Smith delivered some quick shooter to shooter balls under the post allowing RHS to convert some more goals. RHS lost the second quarter but only by two.  Despite a better performance in the second quarter RHS could not maintain the pace against a very skilful New Hall side and this lead to the final score being 10-30. Libby Parker had her best performance to date and was awarded player of the match.

U13B v New Hall L 21-13

The U13B team fought hard throughout their match against New Hall and the score line does not reflect the match played. The girls drew the third quarter and won the final quarter and did not give up at all. Nuria Ramo Pascaul made her debut for the team and showed skill in her position as goal keeper. Emily Fretwell was versatile, playing as goal defence and wing defence. Player of the match was Annie Paddon who had a superb game as goal attack.

The U12A v Newhall  L 12-3.

The score line does not reflect the effort and determination the U12 team put into their play against New Hall. The defensive trio of Freya Guckian, Charlotte Stenning, and Ruby Parker worked really hard to keep the New Hall shooters out of the D; indeed keeping the opposition’s score down to 5 until the last quarter. Their back line pass routine worked extremely well. Molly Entwistle, who earned the accolade of ‘player of the match’, linked extremely well in the centre, making sure her centre passes were effective every time. The attacking end with Rebecca Sweeney, Yasmin Gradwick-Light and Eliza Tribe had the most difficult task against a very strong New Hall defence. RHS struggled feeding the ball into the circle to gain any advantage. Unfortunately New Hall brought on their best shooters to finish the last quarter, resulting in a win 12 goals to 3. Each RHS player showed determination throughout and were complimented on their play by the New Hall coach.

U12B v New Hall  L 10-0

The U12B team took on New Hall in their second game of the season. Both teams got off to a shaky start with errors made throughout court. The first goal was scored by New Hall just 4 minutes into the game! The second quarter was much better for RHS. Izzy Butler at C was taking plenty of interceptions but RHS struggled to convert any goals against a physical New Hall side. The score at half time was 6-0 to New Hall. The second half was very much a defensive one for both teams. Katie Bagnall, Alice Clayton and Lily Mason pressurised their opposition and forced plenty of balls to go off the backline. However, RHS struggled to feed the ball into shooters Morgan Thomas and Amelia Anderson and this meant RHS were still yet to score. In the last quarter Esme Peters came back on for Lucia Soler who played exceptionally well considering it was her first ever netball game. Although RHS defended well, the attacking play was regularly broken down by New Hall and the final score was 10-0. Player of the match was awarded to Izzy Butler for her fantastic work rate at C.

U12 Netball Tournament

The U12’s travelled to Northgate High School to play in the district U12 tournament. This event was run as a ‘Round Robin’ with 6 other schools involved. With a squad of 9 players the team worked hard to try and establish a hold at the start of each game. Unfortunately in the first game against Ipswich High School they were slow on the uptake and Ipswich scored 4 goals in the first half. RHS tightened up their play and pulled back 2 goals but lost overall 5-2. The 2nd game against Ipswich School A was much better, ending in a draw 2-2. Against Ipswich School B they won 4-0 but then lost 7-0 to the eventual winners, Woodbridge, before a final win of 6-0 against Copleston School.

The defence of Katie Bagnall, Freya Guckian, Charlotte Stenning (Cpt) and Ruby Parker (WD) grew in confidence as the games proceeded. Their strength was in starting a back line throw–in and bringing the ball down court. Mollie Entwistle was player of the tournament. Her timing of moves in attack was excellent as were some of her interceptions. Isabella Butler and Rebecca Sweeney interchanged as wing attack and were particularly effective in linking with the shooters. Eliza Tribe and Yasmin Gradwick-Light were both instrumental in the attacking circle. They had the hardest time against some tough opponents which will have given them food for thought! Eliza enjoyed the last game as GA instead of GS!

U13 South Suffolk Schools Netball Tournament

Junior Netball v Orwell Park

Junior 1st Team (U13A) Won 16-14

RHS had a positive start against Orwell Park and were moving well but unfortunately Millie Salter was injured after just 3 minutes. Molly Irvin stepped in to play centre and the girls fought hard to keep with Orwell Park. The second quarter saw George Nicholls and Emily Fretwell also play in the squad and deliver some quality netball. At half time RHS were two goals down and had to compose themselves before heading out for the second half of the game. RHS settled and started to link together as a squad again. The work rate in defence was exceptional and both Annie Tavainavesi and Libby Parker took some good interceptions. It was in the final few minutes of the game that RHS pulled ahead, with a long shot from Holly Folkard-Smith at the edge of the circle to put RHS in the lead. A great game by all, and well done to the girls for pulling back the game in the second half despite a very disrupted first half performance. Player of the match goes to Tor Williams for having her best performance to date and being calm and controlled with the ball. Well done girls – a great win!

Junior 2nd Team (U12A) Won 9-8

A nail-biting finish to the match on Saturday as the RHS team hung on to the lead to win by one goal. RHS were up at half time by 7 goals to 3 and looked dominant but Orwell fought back and prevented our shooters from getting the ball into the ‘D’ so that we could not increase our lead. They scored against the run of play as the RHS team tired and it was left to the final quarter where our defence, Charlotte Stenning, Ruby Parker and Freya Guckian, worked extremely hard to defend. The RHS team deservedly came out on top just as the final whistle blew. Charlotte Stenning was player of the match.

Junior 3rd Team (U13B) Won 23-5

The U13B team dominated against Orwell Park for the whole match with some sound attacking play. Captain Georgina Nicholls played very well at centre but player of the match must go to Beth Carnell for her excellent shooting.

Junior Netball v Ipswich High

U13B Won 9-6

The U13B team had a satisfying victory after a very even match against Ipswich High School. During the first quarter, Molly Williamson played well, finding space and passing accurately. At half time the score was 5—5. Alice Kilian and Beth Carnell both worked hard in the circle. In the third quarter, our defence prevented IHS from scoring while Georgina Nicholls and Molly Irving moved the ball up the court to attack with skill. The final score of 9—6 was a fair reflection of a hard fought match. Player of the match was Molly Irving for maximum effort and excellent focus throughout the game.

U12B Won 10-3

After a good warm-up, the girls were eager to get started. The first quarter got off to a great start with Lily Mason at WD taking an interception off the centre pass which allowed Amelia Anderson at GA to score. However, nerves slightly got the better of RHS which resulted in a number of unforced errors throughout the court. RHS settled in the second quarter which allowed Izzy Butler at C and Alex Jackson at WA to bring the ball smoothly through court and at times they displayed some very creative attacking movement. RHS defended well throughout the whole court which Ipswich High found hard to overcome. At half time, Esme Peters came on to WA and RHS knew they would have to work hard in order to secure the win. There were some great interceptions by Katie Bagnall and Alice Clayton in defence which made it hard for Ipswich to settle. Going into the last quarter RHS were only 3 goals up, so the game was still all to play for. Everyone on court worked tirelessly and there was a superb display of shooting from Morgan Thomas which helped RHS to take the win with the score being 10-3. Player of the match was awarded to Izzy Butler for her fantastic work rate at C.

U13A v Lost 20-22

Fantastic netball was displayed between RHS and Ipswich High, and despite RHS not winning the game their performance was outstanding. RHS played some smart netball with well-timed moves in attack, allowing shooters Tilly Arulampalam and Holly Folkard-Smith to settle in and gain their confidence. RHS dominated throughout parts of the game but they could not hold off Ipswich High in the closing minutes of the game. A great game of netball enjoyed by both teams and spectators. Player of the match was Holly Folkard-Smith.

1st VII v Langley (W 57-23) The 1st VII netball team had a comfortable and satisfying win against Langley School and playing indoors was a treat; the shooters in particular relished the chance to shoot unhindered by wind or rain. RHS started well and it soon became obvious that the battle was between the Langley shooting pair and our circle defence. Both Emily Davidson-Brett and Hannah Garlick were put under pressure from the word go to stave off the assertive attacking pair. At the other end our shooters were given free rein in the circle being able to collect the ball under the post comfortably nearly every time. Josie Falk, Sonia Lei and Flora Vivian used the match as shooting practice and scored between them a massive 57 goals. The three mid court players worked hard on their set plays to bring the ball through the court with speed; Arabella Murrison, Amy Arana-Wade and Chloe Tribe formed the linking partnership to ensure success. A great win which will give confidence to the team for their next fixture.

2nd VII v U16A Langley (W 42-5) The RHS 2nd team started strongly against Langley and were able to gain a substantial lead. Some excellent play was created and the team were working well together. Charlotte Heley was player of the match.

U14A v Ipswich High School (L 1-23)
After a strong warm up, RHS were both physically and mentally prepared to take on a very talented Ipswich High side. The game got off to a slow start with both teams missing crucial shots but plenty of interceptions were being made. Ipswich High had very tall defenders which made it hard for Amelia Keitley-Webb and Lottie Jordan to settle in the attacking circle, but both showed some great rotation and invasive movements. Kyla Conway and Tilly Ager forced a number of errors in defence as did Serena Brown and Izzie Pearson in centre court. However, RHS struggled to bring the ball down court against a very fast Ipswich side. At half time we were down 12-1 but attitudes were very positive. Some changes were made in the second half; Jorgyella Thorpe went from WA to GS to add some height to our attacking circle. Although movement around the circle did improve, RHS struggled to convert any shots. RHS were encouraging throughout and showed great determination against a superior Ipswich side. Although the girls lost, the score did not reflect their hard work and episodes of great movement. Player of the match was awarded to Kyla Conway for her excellent defending at GD.

U14B v Ipswich High School (L 6-16)
After a slow start the girls played a fantastic second half with some aggressive defence from Abby Proven and Immy Kerr. They all worked hard, but there is still room for improvement. Final score was 16-6 to the hosts. Immy Kerr was named player of the match.

U14C v Ipswich High School (W 7-5)
The team started well with good team work from shooters Charlie Holland and Molly Freeman and RHS took an early lead. RHS continued to dominate through the first half with excellent mid court play from Caitlin Stimpson, Libby Street, Immy Peterson and Carla Mini. RHS lead 6-1 at half time. Ipswich High came back in the second half looking much faster and stronger, but RHS’s circle defenders Georgia Folkard-Smith and Saffron Henley managed to contain the attackers up to the final whistle. Final score 7-5 to RHS and the player of the match was Georgia Folkard-Smith.

1st VII v Wymondham (L 25-41)
The first team drew ahead in the early moments of the game and matched the opposition goal for goal for much of the first quarter. Anna Wynn stepped up to make her first team debut, linking well with the other RHS attacking players and Captain Sonia Lei at shooter. Some accurate shooting ensued but a lapse in the last few minutes saw Wymondham take the lead with a 9-6 quarter time score. Despite continued good play in the RHS attack, Wymondham raised their game in the second quarter with a punishing pace and fluidity. The RHS defence struggled to make any impact in this quarter and a high degree of accuracy from both opposition shooters saw Wymondham draw away to a 24-11 half time score. Some defensive changes at half time increased the pressure exerted by RHS, who for the remainder of the game stayed within two goals of the opposition. There were occasions when it looked as though RHS could make progress on the deficit, but rushed and inaccurate passes through the mid-court meant that many opportunities to attack were squandered. Despite the disappointing loss, this game saw some of the best attacking play of the season so far, with Amy Arana-Wade and Chloe Tribe linking well through the attacking court to accurately feed the shooters. Player of the match was Chloe Tribe.

2nd VII v Wymondham (L 17-21)
The 2nd team had a close game with Wymondham. By half time the RHS team were lacking in confidence and had a lot of work to do but the challenge was not impossible. There was some excellent play in attack from Hattie Botwright, Simone Rossouw and the two shooters; Beth Richardson and Annabelle Sweeney, and a great third quarter allowed RHS to pull it back within two goals, However, Wymondham came out fighting in the last quarter, and despite some excellence defensive work from Charlotte Heley, Abi Sweeney and Izzy Dixon RHS could not catch them. The final score was 17-21 in a well-fought game to the final whistle. Player of the match was Hattie Botwright.

3rd VII v Wymondham (L 3-33)
The RHS team struggled from the word go to restrain a fluent and physical Wymondham side. Within the first quarter the hosts had taken a 10-0 lead but the RHS team players gave their all to try to contain the score line. In defence Emma Stuart-Thompson and Kathy Brown linked well with Tabitha Palmer, Beth Davies and Lucy Bradley and Emma Stuart-Thompson was named player of the match

U15A v Wymondham (W 13-10)
The match against Wymondham got off to a very quick start and RHS seemed to be taking control. Millie Orr was able to score the first goal of the game which then allowed RHS to settle in attack. Despite some great play RHS were down by 1 goal at quarter time and the girls knew the match was all to play for. The second and third quarters showed some great play by RHS; Millie Ainsworth and Taylor Godfrey made numerous interceptions in defence despite being significantly shorter than the Wymondham shooters and Sophie Rennison and Cass Peacock worked tirelessly to bring the ball through court and at times showed some great creative attacking play. Going into the last quarter RHS were 3 goals up but Wymondham came out fighting. A great team performance meant that RHS were able to keep this 3 goal lead resulting in the final score of 13-10. Player of the match was Taylor Godfrey who made some great interceptions at GK and pressured her partner throughout the whole game.

U14A v Wymondham (L 2-18)
The game got off to a slow start with both teams making errors when bringing the ball through court. However, despite Kyla Conway and Serena Brown making some very impressive interceptions, RHS were unable to stop an experienced Wymondham side from scoring. During the second quarter, some great rotation between Lottie Jordan and Amelia Keitley-Webb meant that RHS were able to score. Tireless work by Izzie Pearson at C and Jorgyella Thorpe at WA made it hard for Wymondham to settle in defence. However, at half time RHS had left a lot of work to be done if they were to catch up. Changes in the second half saw Jorgyella Thorpe move into the shooting circle and Amelia Keitley-Webb move to WA. Wymondham took a while to adapt to these new changes and Jorgyella Thorpe was able to score a very impressive long-range shot. Despite patches of great play, RHS were unable to keep up with the pace of a well-drilled Wymondham side and the score was 18-2. Player of the match was Kyla Conway who was very controlled in defence and turned over the ball continuously.

Wednesday 22 January:

U13A v Old Buckenham Hall (W 23-8) The team started well and defensively dominated from the outset. Annie Tavainavesi (captain) worked effectively with Libby Parker and they were able to prevent OBH from having too many shots on goal. By half time RHS were leading 9-3. Charlotte Stenning came into the defensive combination and settled in quickly to the fast paced game. She instantly took an interception which was only the start of a great performance. Catie Bennett had another impressive match, implementing her attacking skills into supporting the play through court. Millie Salter and Tor Williams worked hard in attack to get the ball to the circle edge, with excellent timing of their movement and communication throughout the game. The third quarter ended 14-6. Mollie Entwistle also made her first appearance for the U13A team in the final quarter and settled in with ease, linking well with shooters Tilly Arulampalam and Holly Folkard-Smith. Overall another excellent performance from the U13A team, and a well-deserved win. Player of the match was Annie Tavainavesi.

U13B v Old Buckenham Hall (W 18-4) In the first quarter, RHS were very competitive in their play, winning 7—0. Attack was strong with accurate shooting from Beth Carnell and Yasmin Gradwick-Light. In the second quarter, OBH were stronger and Freya Guckian and Rebecca Sweeney had to work hard in defence. For the third quarter, RHS were dominant again however, in the final quarter, OBH stepped up their marking and prevented a number of goals. George Nichols and Ruby Parker played well in the centre whilst Annie Paddon and Emily Fretwell both had a good game. The final score was 18—4 to RHS and player of the match was Beth Carnell.

Tuesday 21 January:

U15A v Ipswich High School (L 7-14) The game got off to a very close start, interceptions were made for both teams throughout court and eventually RHS managed to turn over the ball and take the lead 1-0. The first half was very physical and both Charlene Tait and Millie Ainsworth put the Ipswich High Shooters under a lot of pressure. RHS struggled to bring the ball down through court a number of times despite the tireless work by Cass Peacock which enabled Ipswich to take the lead at half time. After regrouping, RHS came out determined to take the win and everyone managed to up their game and force Ipswich to make a number of errors in all areas of the court. Accurate shooting by Millie Orr and excellent circle movement by Anna Khan at GS allowed RHS to score two unanswered goals. However, despite better play in the second half, RHS were unable to catch Ipswich High and the final score was 14-7. Anna Khan was awarded player of the match for her creative movement in attack.

U15B v Ipswich High School (L 9-10) RHS got off to a very dominating start, Jess Irving at Centre controlled the game and provided a stable link between the attacking and defensive play. Numerous interceptions were made by Hannah Southerton and Ellie Rowe in defence which made it hard for the Ipswich shooters to settle. Thanks to the consistent displays of accurate passing and creative movement RHS were in the lead at half time. Ipswich High came out fighting in the second half and the match became a lot more physical. Olivia Jones at WA demonstrated some excellent attacking movement and she fed the ball well into the RHS shooters. However, the Ipswich Shooters barely missed a shot which added to the pressure of the game. The final three minutes of the game were very tense, both teams were scoring goal for goal and no-one could be sure of who would secure the win. Unfortunately, time was not in RHS’ favour and they lost 10-9. However, this was the team’s best performance to date and so no-one left the match disheartened. Player of the match was Olivia Jones.

Netball v The Perse:

1st VII (L 18-6)

The first team battled well against a well organised and skilled Perse side. After falling behind in the first quarter, the RHS players stepped up their defensive game and restricted the Perse to scoring just 5 goals in the 2nd and 3rd quarters. In defence, Emily Davidson-Brett made several turnovers keeping hopes of an RHS comeback alive. Amy Arana-Wade showed excellent pace in attack that the Perse team had trouble with, but a lack of control in the RHS attack alongside a very strong Perse defensive duo meant that RHS’s scoring opportunities were limited. A final flourish from the Perse in the final quarter meant that the game slipped away, with the final score being an 18-6 loss. However, the RHS team has shown improvements defensively, and adapted quickly to a range of playing combinations, giving a positive outlook for the coming matches. Emily Davidson- Brett was named player of the match.

2nd VII (W 24-6)

After executing a strong warm-up, the RHS second team started with flair against the Perse. Excellent teamwork between Beth Richardson and Simone Rossouw allowed RHS to feed the ball to Annabelle Sweeney and Anna Wynn effectively. RHS finished the first quarter 8-3. RHS continued to work hard in the second quarter; but it was in the third quarter in which RHS defenders Charlotte Heley, Abi Sweeney and Izzy Dixon came into their own. With tight defending they prevented the Perse scoring for the entire quarter. The last quarter saw RHS work right up until the final whistle with a final score of 24-6. An excellent effort was made by all team members. Player of the match went to Simone Rossouw.

3rd VII (L 31-14)

The Perse started the game with an intensity that took RHS by surprise and it was a while until the home team were able to get into their pattern of play. Lucy Bradley and Ophelia Moore made some good linking moves in attack and in the second quarter, the pairing in defence of Kathy Brown and Emma Stuart-Thompson started to make a difference. Unfortunately the Perse shooters did not miss a thing and they easily doubled the RHS score. Player of the match was Emma Stuart –Thompson.

4th V11 (L 9-6)

This was a very close game where neither team dominated any particular area; therefore the ball was carried end to end often without a conclusion. The RHS pairing in defence; Alice Vickers and Flossie Mills worked hard to try to keep the score down and both were named player of the match.

U15A (L 32-8)

The U15A faced the Perse in a very physical game. The Perse started the game strongly and were able to convert 3 goals on the trot. RHS finally settled and some great defensive efforts throughout court allowed Millie Orr to score an impressive long-range shot. Unfortunately, RHS found it hard to feed the circle which allowed the Perse to capitalise on their turnovers and push forwards with their lead. The second quarter proved even more difficult for RHS, the speed and agility of the Perse were hard to match and so the score at half time meant RHS had a lot of work to do in the second half in order to narrow the score.

RHS came out as a different side at half time and scored the first two goals of the quarter. Sophie Rennison worked hard as centre, linking play between the attack and defence, and RHS lost the third quarter by just 1 goal. In the last quarter, the Perse stepped up their play to another level and the fast breaks throughout court proved too much for RHS to overcome. For her hard work in attack and supportive attitude towards the rest of her team, Millie Orr was awarded player of the match.

U15B (L 11-5)

The U15B team had an encouraging match against a good Perse opposition. The girls have made improvements from their last game and throughout the match itself. The game was quick paced, with the Perse making the most of their attacking plays. Despite some strong defensive and mid court play, RHS struggled to convert key opportunities to score, losing the game 11-5. Player of the match was Brittany Shrestha.

U14A (L 29-5)

The 1st quarter was a disaster for the RHS team as they made too many mistakes allowing the Perse team to take a large lead. However, the team revived themselves and started to play more effectively bringing the ball through the court areas with more confidence. Serena Brown worked hard as Wing Defence and player of the match was Captain Amelia Keighley-Webb who, as Wing Attack, dominated her player.

U14B (L 19-4)

The U14Bs were out played by a quick paced Perse side. RHS’ defensive play was good at times with some fantastic interceptions and marking but on too many occasions they struggled to get the ball into the shooting circle. Player of the match Tilly Ager.

U14C (L 11-0)

A rather uncomfortable game for the C team as the Perse dominated all areas of play. However, the RHS players did not give up trying and put into practice the patterns of play they have been developing in lessons. Player of the match was defender Georgia Folkard-Smith.

U13A (W 19-4)

The U13A team started well against the Perse. Quick passing between Tilly Arulampalam and Holly Folkard-Smith allowed them both to shoot close to the post, helping RHS to take a fast lead. RHS started the second quarter with energy. Precise timing through court from Millie Salter and Tor Williams allowed RHS to gain numerous shooting opportunities as they worked the ball all the way to the edge of the circle. RHS scored an impressive 7 goals. Defenders Annie Tavainavesi and Libby Parker worked tirelessly in defence and prevented the Perse from scoring in both the second and third quarters. Catie Bennett had her best performance to date with outstanding defence and she also played a pivotal role in supporting the play through court. Holly Folkard-Smith shot 100% in the third quarter helping RHS to win the game 19-4. Player of the match went to Catie Bennett.

 U13B (W11-6)

During the first quarter, the Perse were dominant, especially in attack, scoring 3 goals to 1. However, in the second quarter RHS played much better, finding space and moving the ball quickly up court. Shooters, Beth Carnell and Yasmin Gradwick-Light, were more confident and on target, George Nicholls and Mollie Entwistle both played well in the centre and Emily Fretwell (Captain) moved well into space. In the last quarter, RHS scored to win 4 goals in quick succession, leaving the final score 11—6. Player of the match was Emily Fretwell.

U13C (L15-2)

The match started very competitively and the first goal was not scored until 4 minutes into the game. Despite some great interceptions by Rebecca Sweeney at Goal Defence, RHS went two goals down. Ruby Parker and Molly Irving linked well in the middle and were able to bring the ball through the centre third in order to feed Eliza Tribe at Goal Attack, who scored a great mid-range goal. At half time, RHS were down but attitudes were not depleted. Katie Bagnall was brought on at Goal Keeper and RHS were determined to make a second half comeback. The defensive duo of Rebecca Sweeney and Katie Bagnall turned over endless interceptions and made it hard for the the Perse to settle and score. However, despite some great play, RHS could not tighten the gap and they lost 15-2. Rebecca Sweeney was awarded player of the match for her excellent defensive work.

Netball v Felsted
The first games of the season started with a block fixture against Felsted School with a total of 12 teams playing.

Home matches
The U15As lost 34-7. Charlene Tait was player of the match and there was some good play throughout the court in a very physical game. Ruth Brown was new to the team and played well.

The U15Bs lost 20-1. Hannah Southerton was awarded player of the match. The team showed good defensive play throughout the game but struggled to feed the circle against a very physical Felsted side.

The U15Cs lost 15-11. Ellie Rowe was named player of the match. In a very tight game, RHS were up at half time 8-6, thanks to good through-court play and accurate shooting but a determined Felsted side stepped up their game in the last quarter to win.

The U14As lost with a rather disappointing 36-8 score but the girls did not stop working. Serena Brown and Jorgyella Thorpe were players of the match

The U14Bs lost 20-5. Tilly Agar was player of the match. The team struggled to bring the ball down court against a very fast and physical Felsted side.

The U14Cs lost 22-1. Georgia Folkard-Smith was awarded player of the match. As a whole there was good work in defence but they struggled to gain any depth in attack against a dictating opposition.

Away matches
The senior squads were away and whilst the overall results were disappointing there was some positive play from RHS at times.

The 1st V11 lost 43-22. Emily Davidson-Brett and Hannah Garlick in defence for the first team had to work really hard and were both awarded players of the match.

The 2nd team had the best start to the season with a well-contested match. With 5 minutes to go the score was 19 all however, despite some fantastic defending from Captain Abi Sweeney and some accurate shooting from Anna Wynn. they could not take the lead, losing 26-22.

In the 3rds game defender Kathy Brown was player of the match. They struggled in the first quarter as new team members tried to link together and then they picked up their game, drawing in the third quarter.

Rebecca Jones, who played in both attack and defence for the 4th team in different quarters, was named player of the match in their 28-7 loss.
