On Thursday 13 March Year 10 mathematicians took part in a challenge organised by the Further Mathematics Support Programme.

The competition involves teams of four working together on a set of mathematical problems in regional heats. Over 50 events have taken place across the country in February and March to qualify for the finals next month.

After a slow start, the Royal Hospital School team of Lexine Lee, Joe Barraclough, Crystal Li and Jack Cuddihy gained pace and momentum, finishing as “runners up” beaten only by Colchester Royal Grammar School.

The team has gained a place in the final of this competition at the Isaac Newton Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Cambridge – which was the location of the lectures by Andrew Wiles proving Fermat’s Last Theorem. We wish the team the best of luck!

Runners Up 1

Andrew Kwok, Alistair Green, Charlie Wuidart-Gray and Helen Yu

The East of England Senior Team Maths Challenge (STMC) was held at Northgate High School, where twenty teams of the best mathematics students from local schools and colleges tackled a series of demanding mathematical challenges for over three hours. The Challenge, now in its 6th year, attracts around 1000 teams around the UK and it aims to provide a stimulating and enjoyable challenge focusing on problem solving, teamwork and communication skills.

The RHS team of Alistair Green, Charlie Wuidart-Gray, Andrew Kwok and Helen Yu initially got off to a slow start but managed to recover after two hours of intense mathematical thinking which included problem solving, team cross-number and mathematical relay races.

The team achieved second place out of the twenty competing schools beaten only by Colchester Royal Grammar School which represents the Schools’ best ever result at this level. The team are hoping for an invitation to attend the National Final in London in the New Year.

Fifteen sixth form “Mathletes” have also been awarded certificates for their performance in the Senior Maths Challenge with Helen Yu, Andrew Kwok and Cherie Fang achieving an outstanding Gold Award. Not only did Helen achieve the highest score in the School for this year, she achieved the best result to date from any Royal Hospital School pupil – a great achievement for Helen.

Both of these results are excellent news for Mathematics at the Royal Hospital School.

The Royal Hospital School is a coeducational boarding and day school for 11 to 18 years olds set in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside overlooking the River Stour. http://www.royalhospitalschool.org
