This year’s Remembrance Day Divisions saw a first for the Royal Hospital School – a Grandfather and Granddaughter on parade together.

Alan Rayner & Olivia King at RHS Divisions

Alan Rayner attended the Royal Hospital School from 1954-58 in Collingwood House. He is now the Standard Bearer for his local Royal British Legion and Deputy Standard Bearer for his local Submarines’ Association.

During Sunday’s Divisions he paraded the RHSA (former pupils) banner and his granddaughter, Olivia King, Year 7 in Drake House, was part of the Francis squad.

The Royal Hospital School’s Remembrance Day Divisions took place on a glorious autumn day last Sunday and the School welcomed Captain Andy Kyte as the inspecting officer.

The pupils were joined by a Division of old boys and girls of varying ages and the sun shone on a spectacular occasion. Watched by hundreds of parents, former pupils and guests, the pupils gave an excellent parade and the Headmaster praised the Junior Houses in particular for their turn out and conduct. A moving Service of Remembrance followed.

Captain Kyte joined the Royal Navy as a Logistics officer in 1987 and underwent a variety of junior appointments including a tour in the aircraft carrier HMS Ark Royal. He then went on to serve on the frigate HMS Active with his main engagements in counter narcotics operations in the Caribbean and the staff of the Senior Naval Officer in Northern Ireland, responsible for logistic support to the ships and Royal Marine units of the Northern Ireland Squadron. In 1996 he was promoted to Lieutenant Commander and joined HMS Chatham and he was promoted to Commander in 2002. Between 2006 and 2009 he served in the amphibious assault ship HMS Bulwark as Commander Logistics and in February 2009 was promoted to Captain. Today Captain Kyte is the Secretary and Executive Assistant to the First Sea Lord and Chief of Naval Staff; a post he has held since 2012.

More than 2000 pupils, parents, staff, alumni and other friends of the Royal Hospital School came to Holbrook on a stunning autumnal Sunday to mark Remembrance Day.

Thank you to Eliza Rowe for these pictures of the day

A whole-school parade of 700 pupils, including the impressive guard and marching band, was followed by a moving service in the Chapel with the sermon conducted by former Chaplain of the Fleet, The Reverend Dr Charles Stewart. Dr Stewart was Chaplain at the Royal Hospital School from 2000 until 2010.

The salute was taken by Royal Marine and former RHS pupil, Major Roland Brading, who is the officer commanding at the rehabilitation company at Lympstone Royal Marine Training Centre, Devon.

The cathedral-proportioned, Chapel was filled to capacity and the choir were, as ever, impressive as they sang anthem, Call of Wisdom by Will Todd, despite returning from the Royal Albert Hall late on Saturday night where they led the worship at the Festival of Remembrance.

After the proceedings, Sir Sherard Cowper-Coles commented on the day, “outside of Whitehall there is no more fitting a place to commemorate Remembrance Sunday. The whole occasion – Divisions and the Chapel Service – brought tears to my eyes”.

The Royal Hospital School is a coeducational boarding and day school for 11 to 18 years olds set in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside overlooking the River Stour. http://www.royalhospitalschool.org

The highlight this week must have been our Choir’s performance at the Annual National Service for Seafarers at St Paul’s Cathedral on Wednesday 10 October. They sang magnificently and our Director of Music, Peter Crompton, was in excellent form as the conductor. The Princess Royal was in attendance and our flag party were commented upon by the very ‘top brass’ of the Navy as being outstanding.

Earlier in the week, there was a first rate lunchtime music concert held in the Burns Recital Hall on Monday and on Wednesday I was fortunate enough to hear an inspiring scholars’ talk given by Dr Allday about the science in Science Fiction.  I was firmly put in my place over the difference between Science Fiction and Space Opera; so I guess there will be no more quotes from the Jedi Master Yoda in future assemblies!

Over the course of last weekend there were two Model United Nations conferences at Christ’s Hospital and Reigate, and representatives of our Royal Marine’s section travelled to Lympston for the annual Pringle trophy. More about both of those activities will be on the blog very soon.

On Saturday 6 October we held a hugely successful open morning when the school welcomed in excess of 80 families, well above our target of 60.  My thanks to the Year 9 guides who did a magnificent job; to the Heads of School who presented so confidently; and to all those members of staff and pupils whose efforts ensured the success of this important event.  It really is most encouraging to have attracted so many prospective pupils and their families and I look forward to an equally successful open morning in November.

On Saturday evening, I attended an excellent organ recital by our new Head of Academic Music, Mr William Saunders. Congratulations to him on his debut performance as a fully-fledged member of the Royal Hospital School.

On Sunday we saw the first set of Divisions of the academic year. The Inspecting officer, Captain Tulloch, was hugely complimentary over the School’s turnout  – we have set the bar very high. I was particularly impressed by the quality of the junior house squad’s marching.  Well done to the Junior House Prefects for marshalling their squads so well and well done to all our new pupils on making this first set of Divisions such an impressive parade.

Afterwards, the Chapel was bursting to capacity for our Harvest Thanksgiving Service and it was wonderful to see so many friends and family participating in our first Sunday morning service of the year.
