Following on from his successful ‘Olympic Voices’ singing day, the newly appointed Head of Singing, Dominic Peckham, will be running another workshop on Saturday 9 November entitled ‘Great Britten!’ – this time at RHS. The workshop is part of Aldeburgh Music’s ‘Friday Afternoons’ celebrating the life of Benjamin Britten and is open to local Primary School students in Years 5 & 6.
‘Friday Afternoons’ is the name given to a collection of 12 songs composed by Benjamin Britten between 1933 and 1935. These simple songs, with witty piano accompaniments, are dedicated to Britten’s schoolmaster brother, Robert, and the boys of Clive House Preparatory School, Prestatyn, where singing lessons and practice regularly took place on Friday afternoon. They are forming part of Aldeburgh Music’s Britten Centenary programme and the worldwide Britten 100 celebrations. This year-long project is aimed at encouraging more singing in schools and highlighting the composer’s legacy of work for young people. The project will end on Friday 22 November, Britten’s birthday, with tens of thousands of people across the UK joining together to sing the songs.
Dominic Peckham is looking forward to working with so many young people:
I am incredibly excited to be joining forces with RHS and the ‘Friday Afternoons’ team at Aldeburgh Music for this special event. It’s going to be such a wonderful experience to welcome so many young people from across the region to this unique day. Benjamin Britten is a jewel in the crown of British Choral music and this fun-packed and funky day will definitely inspire new ears and minds to explore his fantastic music. We’re gong to ‘turn it all on it’s head’ and see what his melodies sound like with modern mash-ups and up-to-date rhythms! Just bring yourselves, your ears and your funk!
This event promises to be an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The workshop is funded by the Royal Hospital School and is free to pupils wishing to attend but we do ask that groups are accompanied by a member of staff or parent. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. Places will be allocated on a first come, first served basis so please contact us if you wish to attend.
