More than 40 Royal Hospital School athletes travelled to the Suffolk County Trials on a very wet day. The final results are still be be posted as the rain washed away score sheets! RHS did, however, gain eight first places and these pupils will now go forward to compete in the Anglian Championships in June. Notable performances were from Toby Eaton (Year 12, Collingwood) who won the 200m, Jessie Vogel (Year 11, Hawke) who won the Triple Jump and Discus, Brendan Tait (Year 12, St Vincent) who won the Shot and the Discus and Annie Tavianavesi (Year 8, Blake) who won the Shot.
Last week was the English Schools’ Cup and all three RHS teams finished a very creditable second place. Highlights for the junior girls were from Holly Folkard-Smith (Year 8, Blake) and Annie Tavianavesi (Year 8, Blake) in the Shot. In the inter girls, Charlene Tait (Year 10, Hood) gave an excellent performance in the Javelin and Jorgyella Thorpe (Year 9, Hood) in the Shot. In the inter boys Sam Cantelo (Year 10, Collingwood) achieved the top score over his two events and Sam Hindley (Year 10, St Vincent) ran the 800m in 2.04, which is only 0.2 seconds outside a School Record.
On Saturday 17 May, RHS competed in an invitational meet at Gresham’s in Norfolk. The junior girls competed well with Jorgyella Thorpe (Year 8, Blake) still in good form winning the Shot and the team coming third overall. Sophie Rennison (Year 10, Raleigh) won two events’ creating new personal bests in the Hurdles and the High Jump. Sam Hindley (Year 10, St Vincent) won the 400 and the 800 in style and the senior boys finished second with Sean Cuddihy (Year 12, Collingwood) stealing the show, winning both the 800m and 1500m. The day ended with the relay team charging home to beat a fast Gresham’s team!
