Thirty swimmers from the Royal Hospital School are taking part in this year’s Great East Swim held at Alton water on Saturday 21 June. The annual event attracts around 3,000 swimmers and involves 1/2 mile, 1 mile, 2 mile and 5k open water competitions. It is part of the Great Swim Series which has five events across England and Scotland attracting in the region of 22,000 participants.

The Royal Hospital School pupils have been taking part in an intensive schedule of training in the School pool with their coach, Emma Cook, to prepare them for this tough challenge and over the weekend some of team were able to experience open water swimming and try out swimming in wetsuits at Tri-farm, a Tri-athlon venue near Chelmsford. They gained some great tips on body position, breathing technique and how to negotiate the various marker buoys around the course. All the swimmers found the experience useful and they look forward to the swim next week more confident and well prepared.

On Saturday 21 September, the Royal Hospital School held a Sailing and Raft-Building taster day for prospective pupils, at neighbouring Alton Water Reservoir.

The more experienced sailors went out in Toppers and RS Teras under the expert guidance of Director of Sailing, Andy Nutton. Enjoying a gentle breeze, they were taken through skills training and top tips, as well as some competitive racing. Those who were less confident, or who were trying sailing for the first time, took to the water in groups, each with their own instructor giving them a chance to try out both helming and crewing. After a morning of experiencing what it is like to be a sailor at the Royal Hospital School and a delicious barbecue lunch on the shore, the 10 and 11 year olds took part in a raft building competition. It was a battle of the sexes and clear from the start, that the girls had far superior knot tying skills than the boys! Unfortunately for the boys their raft barely survived being carried to the water’s edge while the girls’ held fast and they won the race.

The fun continued as everyone jumped off the jetty into the water to finish off a highly enjoyable day!

On Saturday 22 June, 45 pupils from the Royal Hospital School will take to the water in the Great East Swim at neighbouring Alton Water reservoir. This annual event attracts around 3,000 swimmers and involves either a 1/2 mile, 1 mile, 2 mile and 5k open water swim. The participants start in waves of 300 every half an hour to ensure a smoothly run event with the highest safety possible.

The pupils taking part have been training hard in the build up to the Great East Swim and are nearly ready to take on this personal challenge. On the day before the race two-time Olympic medallist, David Davies, will be giving them a master-class in the School pool providing some useful tips on distance and open water swimming.

David Davies is a Welsh Commonwealth Games and Olympic distance swimmer. Born in Barry, Vale of Glamorgan, Davies swam for Wales at the 2002 and 2006 Commonwealth Games and represented Great Britain at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games in the 1500m freestyle (Bronze Medallist) and at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games in the 1500m freestyle and the Olympic 10K Marathon Swim (Silver Medallist). He held the British Records in the 400, 800 and 1500 freestyle (Silver Medallist in 2008 European Championships). He also represented Great Britain again in the 1500m freestyle at the 2012 London Olympic Games.

RHS Community Action supports the Woolverstone Project

At Christmas, it is the tradition at RHS that we raise funds for a local children’s charity that we also support with practical assistance.

The Woolverstone Project is a RYA Sailability Training Centre which provides sailing opportunities and tuition for those with physical and learning disabilities at Alton Water and on the River Orwell at Woolverstone.

The Youth Section meets on Thursday evenings from April to October at the project’s sailing centre at Alton Water. Young people aged 7 to 18 participate in two hours of sailing, with regular attendance numbers around twelve children, who are accompanied by their parents and carers.

They are taken out and taught to sail in the specially designed Access Dinghies. These very stable boats have weighted and hollow centre boards that fill with water when lowered, allowing the dinghies to sail on the heel like keel boats. The crew sit in canvas seats facing forward, steering with a joystick, with the control lines for the sails in front of them.

The physically able children board from and disembark on the pontoon. There is a hoist to enable those with limited mobility to get in and out of a dinghy on its trolley – they are launched from and brought ashore on the slipway.

The RHS support team comprises ten students who assist the adult volunteers and professional instructors with the launching and recovery of the Access Dinghies and those who wish may join in with the sailing. Those not sailing spend their time on shore talking with children who are waiting to sail and with their parents.

In recent years, RHS Sixth Form Pupils who have qualified as dinghy instructors have given their time and extended their experience by teaching the children with disabilities to sail.

The money raised from the RHS Christmas charity day will be used by the youth section of the Woolverstone Project to purchase weatherproof clothing and buoyancy aids. Any additional proceeds will be given to the appeal fund for a new dinghy.

The Royal Hospital School is a coeducational boarding and day school for 11 to 18 years olds set in 200 acres of Suffolk countryside overlooking the River Stour. http://www.royalhospitalschool.org
