U14A v Woodbridge (Won 13.5-6.5)
A great first innings, both batting and fielding, set the U14As up for a comfortable victory against Woodbridge School. Confident batting and secure deep fielding, combined with two superb catches by Beth Dwerryhouse, gave the side a significant lead of 8 ½ to 2 ½ at half-time. The team capitalised on their half-time lead with a further five rounders and some tight fielding, resulting in a well-deserved victory of 13 ½ – 6 ½.  Player of the match was Beth Dwerryhouse.

U14B v Woodbridge (Won 16-9)
A large U14B squad, with many girls making their debut performance, took on Woodbridge on Wednesday. RHS batted first and managed to score 8 rounders with the majority of the girls making the score sheet. When fielding in the first innings, RHS were decisive and made it hard for Woodbridge to score. Going into the second innings, RHS were leading 8-4 but they knew they would have to work hard in order to secure the win. They achieved 8 rounders with some excellent batting by Gemma Ayling, Sara Benavent Marti and Elena Miralles. The final score was 16-9. There were patches of good play by all but Georgia Folkard-Smith was awarded player of the match for catching 3 people out and being in control on 4th post.

U15A v Finborough (Won 14.5-9.5)
The U15As started slowly in their match against Finborough scoring 5 1/2 rounders to 4 1/2 in the first innings. There was some impressive fielding in the second from Sophie Rennison and Millie Orr, getting three batters out in a row at first post. Some fantastic catches from Sophie Atkinson and Charlene Tait saw Finborough down to 3 men with 15 balls left. What started out as quite a slow game turned into a nail biting finish with RHS winning 14.5 to 9.5. The player of the match was Sophie Atkinson.

U15B v Finborough (Won 17-16.5)
The U15B team had a great game against Finborough. After drawing level at 6 rounders each after half time, the RHS team went in to bat again and scored another 11 in their allotted time . Captain Sammy Chiu scored two with great hits over 1st base and Brittany Shresthra scored tactical halves with all of her hits.  With the opposition coming in to bat, the RHS team fielded rather shakily to allow them to creep up. However, their nerves held and the final score ended up RHS 17 Finborough 16.5.

1st XI v Colchester Royal Grammar School 1st XI (Lost by 40 runs)
The 1st XI visited CRGS and played on the most splendid batting track seen by Mr Topley for some time. The Colchester batsman rattled up 180-6 off their 20 overs while the RHS seam bowlers found bowling ‘dot balls’ a huge challenge. Ben Osbourn was the pick of the RHS batsman coming in at No 5, as he made a fine and aggressive 46 in very quick time. RHS were bowled out 40 runs adrift (still scoring 7 an over) being bowled out for 140.

2nd XI v Colchester Royal Grammar School 2nd XI (Won by 9 wickets)
Peter Crockett’s decisive knock at Colchester saw our 2nd XI home after some excellent initial work by bowlers and fielders alike which restricted Colchester to 75 all out. Colchester’s wickets were shared about but George Petrides and Ollie Sellers claimed three each. Peter Crockett managed to complete an outstanding and aggressive half century

Junior 1st XI v Moreton Hall Prep (Won)
The Junior 1st XI emphatically won their match with Moreton Hall Prep. Josh Frame with 50 and Alex Oxley put on a fine opening partnership before RHS posted a very challenging 160 off 20 overs. Max Orr and William Kempster contributed more forceful batting with some good hitting in the end. Moreton Hall struggled against our disciplined bowling; especially from Cameron Jordan and Killian Rew who both conceded just 7 runs each from their 5 over spells. Moreton Hall finally made 55 all out with the wickets shared about all the RHS bowlers.

There were also three friendly midweek games against Littlegarth U11 A, B and C teams. The RHS U12A were winning before bad light stopped play, the U12B won their match by 10 runs and the U12C won their very first game of hard ball cricket. Edward Fairly batted well for his 46 runs in the A Game.

1st XI v Framligham (Lost by 8 wickets)
Whilst eight of the Saturday cricket matches with Framlingham College were cancelled due to the rain, the 1st XI did travel away and were well beaten by 8 wickets. Having won the toss, RHS batted first and the top order batsmen missed out again. They all had opportunities to show their batting skill but will be disappointed to have been dismissed for 139. A few dropped catches, together with a facial injury to one of our fielders (no names mentioned!), allowed Framlingham College the easy win but it was good to get a game in where so many cricketers didn’t.

Five Royal Hospital School pupils took part in the Paras 10 endurance event in Colchester last weekend and Sean Cuddihy, Year 12 Collingwood, brought home the U19s trophy after completing the challenge well within the paratroopers cut-off time for selection!

This gruelling challenge consisted of a 10 mile run, carrying 35 pounds of weight whilst wearing full military trousers and boots. 430 people took part, running in sweltering heat in an endurance race which forms a crucial part of selection for the parachute regiment. All the RHS boys finished the race, which is a fantastic achievement! When prospective paratroopers race at this distance, the cut-off time for selection is 1 hour and 50 minutes. Cam Fairrie and James Parker finished just outside and Sean Cuddihy finished well inside to win the Under 19s category in a very impressive time of 1 hour 39 minutes.

Lord's Trip

A group of 40 Royal Hospital School pupils and staff travelled down to Lord’s on Saturday 17 May to be a part of the 16,000 crowd to witness the NatWest T20 Blast matches involving Middlesex, Essex and Sussex.

It was a little more special for the RHS pupils as Essex Eagles star bowler, Reece Topley, a former pupil of the School, joined the group to enjoy the second match between Middlesex Panthers and Sussex Sharks. The left arm paceman was the key man for the Essex Eagles as he restricted the Panthers score 3/24 by taking pace off the ball with his off-cutters, together with some clever death bowling. Acting Captain, Mark Pettini and Ravi Bopara, then played beautifully to ensure a fine eight wicket win by the Eagles.

RHS 1st XI Captain, Drew Felstead, Year 12 Raleigh, said, “Lord’s is the mecca of cricket and many of the group had never been there, so it was fantastic to see especially as our seats were right behind the arm at the Nursery End. To see so many internationals on show was terrific and to have Reece join us later was great, as many of the boys know him or even shared the same boarding house with him. People around us just couldn’t understand why he was with us!”

More than 40 Royal Hospital School athletes travelled to the Suffolk County Trials on a very wet day. The final results are still be be posted as the rain washed away score sheets! RHS did, however, gain eight first places and these pupils will now go forward to compete in the Anglian Championships in June. Notable performances were from Toby Eaton (Year 12, Collingwood) who won the 200m, Jessie Vogel (Year 11, Hawke) who won the Triple Jump and Discus, Brendan Tait (Year 12, St Vincent) who won the Shot and the Discus and Annie Tavianavesi (Year 8, Blake) who won the Shot.

Last week was the English Schools’ Cup and all three RHS teams finished a very creditable second place. Highlights for the junior girls were from Holly Folkard-Smith (Year 8, Blake) and Annie Tavianavesi (Year 8, Blake) in the Shot. In the inter girls, Charlene Tait (Year 10, Hood) gave an excellent performance in the Javelin and Jorgyella Thorpe (Year 9, Hood) in the Shot. In the inter boys Sam Cantelo (Year 10, Collingwood) achieved the top score over his two events and Sam Hindley (Year 10, St Vincent) ran the 800m in 2.04, which is only 0.2 seconds outside a School Record.

On Saturday 17 May, RHS competed in an invitational meet at Gresham’s in Norfolk. The junior girls competed well with Jorgyella Thorpe (Year 8, Blake) still in good form winning the Shot and the team coming third overall. Sophie Rennison (Year 10, Raleigh) won two events’ creating new personal bests in the Hurdles and the High Jump. Sam Hindley (Year 10, St Vincent) won the 400 and the 800 in style and the senior boys finished second with Sean Cuddihy (Year 12, Collingwood) stealing the show, winning both the 800m and 1500m. The day ended with the relay team charging home to beat a fast Gresham’s team!

FirefleetThis has been a busy half of term for the RHS sailing squad, with the School competing in three major inter-school events.

On the first weekend our senior squad travelled to Canterbury for the South East BSDRA Championships. The RHS team made their way through the first round of seven races undefeated and came up against Eton in the semi-finals. Eton were brushed aside with ease to set up a final with Sevenoaks. This proved to be a tough match and RHS narrowly lost a three race series by only one point.

The second competition was the Hoad Shield, hosted by Sevenoaks, involving two junior teams and a senior team from the Royal Hospital School. Both junior teams progressed into the semi-finals where they came up against each other. The two-race series saw the A team come out on top, setting up a final with the ever-strong Sevenoaks squad. They were, however, no match for the Royal Hospital School junior A team who finished as champions, 2-0 in the final.

The seniors also progressed into the finals with six wins to meet Sevenoaks in light and shifty conditions. Another close fought battle put the team in second place.

Last weekend, two senior teams travelled to Rutland water for the Eastern Region Team Racing Championships. The 1st squad earned a spot in the semi-final, undefeated, and they were joined by the 2nds after an excellent performance against Ipswich School in which they won by 9 points. This pitted the RHS 1st team against the RHS 2nd team in the semis. The 1st team came out on top to go through to the final, while the 2nds lost to Oakham in the third place race-off. The final was the Royal Hospital School against Norwich School. Conditions were perfect and, after a slightly nervy first start, RHS went on to dominate winning 2-0 and ending its most successful team racing year to date.

Three Year 12 Collingwood boys will be tackling the gruelling Paras’ 10 on Sunday 18 May in Colchester. Sean Cuddihy, Cameron Fairrie and James Parker have been training hard in any spare time they have found outside of school for, what has been called, ‘the ultimate 10 mile endurance race’!

IMG_6448

James Parker (left) and Cameron Fairrie (right) run the mini-marathon in full kit to train for the Paras 10

The Paras’ 10 is a 10 mile cross-country run carrying a 35lb (16kg) Bergen (this excludes water and food) while wearing long trousers and military style boots. The race was founded in 1982 by WO1 JJ Wilson and was hosted by The Parachute Regiment in Aldershot from ’82 – ’93. Alongside the Paras’ 10 is a straightforward running race over the same course but without the extra weight or clothing.

The boys have trained together to be ready in time for Sunday, running both with and without packs mainly around neighbouring Alton Water reservoir. They also ran the School’s 10.5 mile mini-marathon held last weekend with James and Cameron, running with the full pack and kit, finishing in just 18 minutes past the cut off time for P company!

The boys are raising money for the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine Patient Welfare Fund. If you wish to support them in this both physically and mentally challenging endeavour for a worthy cause, please visit http://www.justgiving.com/James-Parker16

Cycle route

David Buchanan, the School dentist, set off to cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support on Saturday 10 May along with approximately 20 other dentists. In some cases practices have a relay team to cycle each stage, however, David has decided to take on the whole challenge himself!

The challenge is 874 miles over 9 days, which equates to cycling approximately 120 miles a day, stopping at various points over night to refuel.

David has been preparing for the challenge by spending his weekends cycling between 80-100 miles and for Lent he gave up coffee, bread, sugar and meat to help get him fit.

David-Buchanan-cycle

Year 11 pupil, James Eaden, presented David with a cheque from the School Chapel to sponsor David on this gruelling challenge. We all wish him the best of luck over the coming days.
