On Tuesday 28 January, Stringfever, a four-man one-family electric string quartet delivered an extraordinary evening’s entertainment to a packed Recital Hall.

Stringfever’s show is truly genre-defying; flying between classical, film, gypsy, pop and rock at dazzling speed and with virtuosic slickness. The climax of the evening was a performance of Ravel’s Boléro featuring all four players on one cello.

The group’s blinding showmanship and vibrant chemistry thrilled the audience who demanded two encores.

Wednesday 22 January:

U13A v Old Buckenham Hall (W 23-8) The team started well and defensively dominated from the outset. Annie Tavainavesi (captain) worked effectively with Libby Parker and they were able to prevent OBH from having too many shots on goal. By half time RHS were leading 9-3. Charlotte Stenning came into the defensive combination and settled in quickly to the fast paced game. She instantly took an interception which was only the start of a great performance. Catie Bennett had another impressive match, implementing her attacking skills into supporting the play through court. Millie Salter and Tor Williams worked hard in attack to get the ball to the circle edge, with excellent timing of their movement and communication throughout the game. The third quarter ended 14-6. Mollie Entwistle also made her first appearance for the U13A team in the final quarter and settled in with ease, linking well with shooters Tilly Arulampalam and Holly Folkard-Smith. Overall another excellent performance from the U13A team, and a well-deserved win. Player of the match was Annie Tavainavesi.

U13B v Old Buckenham Hall (W 18-4) In the first quarter, RHS were very competitive in their play, winning 7—0. Attack was strong with accurate shooting from Beth Carnell and Yasmin Gradwick-Light. In the second quarter, OBH were stronger and Freya Guckian and Rebecca Sweeney had to work hard in defence. For the third quarter, RHS were dominant again however, in the final quarter, OBH stepped up their marking and prevented a number of goals. George Nichols and Ruby Parker played well in the centre whilst Annie Paddon and Emily Fretwell both had a good game. The final score was 18—4 to RHS and player of the match was Beth Carnell.

Tuesday 21 January:

U15A v Ipswich High School (L 7-14) The game got off to a very close start, interceptions were made for both teams throughout court and eventually RHS managed to turn over the ball and take the lead 1-0. The first half was very physical and both Charlene Tait and Millie Ainsworth put the Ipswich High Shooters under a lot of pressure. RHS struggled to bring the ball down through court a number of times despite the tireless work by Cass Peacock which enabled Ipswich to take the lead at half time. After regrouping, RHS came out determined to take the win and everyone managed to up their game and force Ipswich to make a number of errors in all areas of the court. Accurate shooting by Millie Orr and excellent circle movement by Anna Khan at GS allowed RHS to score two unanswered goals. However, despite better play in the second half, RHS were unable to catch Ipswich High and the final score was 14-7. Anna Khan was awarded player of the match for her creative movement in attack.

U15B v Ipswich High School (L 9-10) RHS got off to a very dominating start, Jess Irving at Centre controlled the game and provided a stable link between the attacking and defensive play. Numerous interceptions were made by Hannah Southerton and Ellie Rowe in defence which made it hard for the Ipswich shooters to settle. Thanks to the consistent displays of accurate passing and creative movement RHS were in the lead at half time. Ipswich High came out fighting in the second half and the match became a lot more physical. Olivia Jones at WA demonstrated some excellent attacking movement and she fed the ball well into the RHS shooters. However, the Ipswich Shooters barely missed a shot which added to the pressure of the game. The final three minutes of the game were very tense, both teams were scoring goal for goal and no-one could be sure of who would secure the win. Unfortunately, time was not in RHS’ favour and they lost 10-9. However, this was the team’s best performance to date and so no-one left the match disheartened. Player of the match was Olivia Jones.

General Hockey RHS

Wednesday 22 January:

Junior 1st XI v Woodbridge (W 2-0): The first team improved over the week overcoming Woodbridge 2-0. A good finish from Fergus Atkins on his reverse stick and a bullet strike from the top of the D from Tom Ponsonby sealed the win for RHS.

2nd XI v Woodbridge (L 1-0): The 2nds produced a fine all round performance from a new team showing excellent promise for the forthcoming games. An impressive display from Harry Sargent and Harry Fosker in defence was supported by fine efforts from Finn Anderson and Will Carter. Despite dominating possession, RHS failed to convert and lost to a breakaway goal in the second half.

3rd XI v Woodbridge (L 1-0): At home the 3rds lost 1-0 but Cameron Jordan played well in attack.

4th XI v Woodbridge (W 3-2): A win for the 4th XI with keeper, Max Cullinane, having a great match.

Saturday 25 January:

U14A v Framlingham (L 5-0): The U14As performed well against a very strong Framlingham side. Xavy Bull and Charlie Kilham had an excellent games, repelling most attacks with skill and determination. Ben Arulampalam also played well. Despite a lot of positive play, RHS lost the game 5-0 with Sam Christmas playing valiantly in goal to keep the score down.

U14B v Framlingham (L 2-0): Away the U14Bs played in an open end to end game but unfortunately the opposition forwards were more clinical than the RHS strike force and an even game ended 2-0 to the home side.

U15A v Framlingham (L 2-3): The U15As played in a tightly contested and physical match. An early goal from Framlingham forced  RHS to increase their intensity. Excellent shape in the midfield, particularly from man of the match, Richard Vallance, produced chances which Alex Finding and Ben Conner converted into goals. However, Framlingham managed to answer back for every goal, making the final score 2-3.

U15B v Framlingham (L 2-1): The U15Bs lost 2-1 with Matt Saxby once again on the score sheet and Lexy Peterson being heroic in goal.

3rd XI v Framlingham (L 4-2): After a sparking first half performance and good goal by Matt Cantelo, RHS 3rds were worthy leaders at half time. However, 2 minutes of madness immediately after half time allowed Framlingham to score three goals. RHS came back with a cracking goal from Charlie Wuidart-Gray but unfortunately Framlingham scored again in the last minute to make the score 4-2. George Petrides and Cameron Kerr were men of the match.

2nd XI v Framlingham (D 1-1): The 2nd XI began slowly and conceded a breakaway goal after just three minutes. The rest of the first half chances were squandered including a run of four penalty corners. In the second half RHS had all the possession but only managed one goal -the well struck equaliser by Alex Rayment came from a tight angle. Man of the match was Will Matthews.

1st XI v Framlingham (L 4-1): The 1st XI suffered a 4-1 defeat against a tidy Framlingham side. The team composed themselves after half time and Jessie Vogel found the back of the net but the damage had been done. Player of the match was Drew Felstead.

Today the Heads and Deputy Heads of School will be attending the Admiral Arthur Phillip Commemoration Service at St Mary Le Bow Church in the City of London. This service is being held to celebrate Arthur Phillip’s life and honour the bicentenary of his death.

Adirmal Arthur Philip

Admiral Arthur Phillip was born not far from St Mary Le Bow in 1738 and was educated at the Greenwich Hospital School, now the Royal Hospital School, Ipswich. He joined the Royal Navy at the age of 15 and during this time he fought in the Seven Years’ War and the Spanish-Portuguese War. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1762 and later to Captain in 1781.

In September 1786 Phillip was appointed Commodore of the Fleet which was to transport convicts and soldiers to settle in Botany Bay in Australia. Eleven ships took part in this eight month voyage carrying all of the supplies needed to start a new colony. On arriving at Botany Bay, Phillip decided that it was not suitable for a settlement, he searched for a new area and on 26 January 1788 landed at Sydney Cove, named after Lord Sydney. Arthur Philip became the first Governor of New South Wales (1788-1792).

Phillip set up the colony and ensured that the settlement was well established; having to battle through a lack of supplies following the wreck of the HMS Sirius and an influx of convicts who were too sick to work. By 1792 Phillip was suffering from the poor diet and was granted permission to return to England. In 1799 he became a Rear-Admiral and retired from the Navy in 1805 with the rank of Admiral of the Blue. He continued to correspond with those in New South Wales and promote the interests of the colony with government officials until his death in 1814.

In memory of this illustrious former pupil, the Royal Hospital School is hosting the ‘Admiral Arthur Phillip Bicentenary Dinner’ on Saturday 29 March, 2014. The evening will include a superb Australian inspired three-course meal with Sir Michael Savory, Chairman of the Britain-Australia Society, as the Guest of Honour. On Saturday 11 January sailors from Birmingham University visited the Royal Hospital School for a one-day Team Racing Regatta. Our senior team took part in training in the morning and then competed in a 7 race series after lunch. They won five of the seven races against one of the top university sailing teams in the country.

RHS-girls-sailing

On the 18 and 19 January, Sophie Opielok and Lulu Knott travelled to Datchet Water to race in the first of the Youth Olympic qualifiers for the Laser 4.7 fleet. Racing was tough with 55 of the country’s best Youth 4.7 sailors. Toby Allday

Jack Petchey Award winner Toby Allday

Toby, Year 10 at the Royal Hospital School, joined the North Essex District Cricket Board in 2012 and played with distinction in that year’s unbeaten U13 side.

Paul Lees, U13 manager, said

Toby always played his best and more importantly played the role the team needed most. His efforts were recognised by Essex and he played for the U13 Essex side. The following year, as an U14, he again was on the fringes of Essex, but still committed himself to the District U15 side and always contributed selflessly what was required by the team. He showed great leadership and set the standard the team needed to aspire to. Always a popular member of the team, both with players and coaches, his performances and attitude has made the team perform to the highest level.

As a result Toby Allday was awarded the Jack Petchey Award for achievement. The Jack Petchey Foundation ‘helps young people to raise their aspirations, believe in themselves and make a contribution to society’.

On Monday 20 January Tom Bell, an internationally acclaimed recitalist and visiting organ teacher at the Royal Hospital School, hosted the first RHS Organ Open Day, assisted by Crompton Organ Scholar Oli Morris. The organ loft was open all day for pupils to enjoy interactive demonstrations.

IMG_6078

More than a hundred pupils of all ages flocked up and down the stairs to the organ loft over the course of the day, many of whom were able to try their hands (and feet) at mastering the one of the finest pipe organs in Europe. Some were even lucky enough to be shown inside the impressive instrument itself, coming face to face with its scale and complexities.

William Saunders, Director of Music, said, “The day was a triumphant success, giving RHS pupils a much deeper understanding and appreciation of the extraordinary work of art that has, until now, loomed forbiddingly above them – a mystery to all but a tiny few. Given the popularity of the event, we hope to repeat it each term and eventually ensure that nobody passes through RHS without learning a little more about the King of Instruments and realising quite how lucky we are to have so majestic an example sitting, ready for use, in our own Chapel”.
