On Friday 20 September, RHS Equestrian Team members, Lucy Watson and Rose Arbuthnot, competed at the Topthorn Equestrian Centre Clear Round Show Jumping.

Lucy gained 4th place in the 2ft 3 class and Rose 6th place in the same class. Rose also went on to win the 2ft 6 class with a double clear round. We are looking forward to seeing the girls enjoy further successes as part of the RHS Equestrian team this year.

Last weekend junior pupils in Years 7 and 8 at the Royal Hospital School enjoyed a well-earned rest with a long weekend exeat. Those living close by were able to go home on Saturday and Sunday while pupils with family further afield were treated to a fantastic day of shopping and sight-seeing in historic Cambridge and a mouth-watering Brunch feast on Sunday.

On Saturday 28 September team sailors from the Royal Hospital School travelled to Westbere Lake, near Canterbury, to take part in the BSDRA East Kent Autumn Team Racing. They sailed confidently in Fireflies and 420s against top sailing schools; Sevenoaks, The King’s School Canterbury, Ardingly and Millfield, in gusty conditions.

RHS, RHS Rugby, rhs sport, sport at rhs, the royal hospital school

It was another challenging and hard-fought week for the Royal Hospital School rugby teams playing both at home and away.

RHS vs CRGS

RHS vs CRGS

Midweek RHS hosted Kings Ely. The U16Bs scored freely beating the visitors 54-3, Jack Dakin dominating all over the field. While the U16As also won 17-12 against a good Ely side. Lyam Thorpe once again proving his class and being named man-of–the-match.

The 3rd XV played Ely 1st XV and performed extremely well against some talented Ely players, however they were just beaten 19-15.

The U13As travelled to Hadleigh High School and faced a physically much larger side. 12-0 down at half time they rallied to score 19 unanswered points in the second half to win 19-12. Debutant Alex Oxley was man-of–the-match.

The U15A faced Culford away and pressed several `self-destruct` buttons to lose 19-15 in a disappointing display.

Saturday’s games were all against Colchester Royal Grammar School. The U14B team lost 29-15 with Scott Taylor and Ollie Leggett playing well. The A team faced a very strong and undefeated CRGS side. Huge efforts in defence meant that the game was close but CRGS ran out winners 10-0. Elliot Rayment playing well at centre.

A weakened U15B team went 32pts to Nil down with just 20 minutes remaining. RHS  discovered their collective courage and astonishingly ran in 27pts which just fell short of a deserved draw. Francois Hildebrand was man-of-the-match.

The U15A team scored in the final play of a good game to win 14-10. Number 8 Charlie Ewen grabbing the headlines and Toby Allday once again giving an outstanding performance.

The U16As played well but lost 24-14 and need to work hard midweek to get their season rolling. The 2nds won 33-15 but showed signs of complacency. It was, however, good to see forwards and backs working well together and the side remains unbeaten this season.

After a slow error strewn start, the 1st XV  hit top gear and demolished CRGS 57-12. Tries from good support play and a solid base allowed RHS to dominate much of the game. Pleasing performances from prop, Jeven Wright, and Matt Cantelo, now at number 8, were eclipsed by an outstanding attacking display from Dan Smith.

european day of languages, languages at rhs, RHS, the royal hospital school

EDL-banner-COE2012-EN

Thursday 26 September was European Day of Languages and the teaching staff and pupils of all ages at the Royal Hospital School marked the occasion.

The day began in Chapel with four Year 7 pupils: Lucia Soler, Mattia Lau, Yana Sokoltsova and Ilai Mate reading the Lord’s Prayer in Spanish, English, Ukrainian and Fijian. The Chaplain’s reading was given in French by Jess Edney (Y13), in German by George Rennison (Y12) and in Latin by Sean Cuddihy (Y12). The Chaplain congratulated those involved saying “they all read confidently and accurately; and it was a wonderful chance to hear familiar words uttered in different tongues”.

Members of staff and pupils wore badges indicating which languages they could speak and most classes were greeted in a foreign language, regardless of the subject being taught. At morning break the Languages Department was converted into a continental café and the first one hundred lucky pupils to arrive and speak to their teachers in a language other than their first language, were rewarded with a cup of hot chocolate and a pain au chocolat.

At lunch time the dining hall was festooned with colourful flags representing the many nationalities who are part of the Royal Hospital School community and delicious dishes from France, Germany and Spain were served. Throughout the day there were competitions and around the corridors interesting linguistic signage to decipher. Miss Wright, Head of Languages, thanked the staff for making the day such a success and the whole school community for getting involved with such enthusiasm.

The Royal Hospital School’s Peer Support Committee provides a stable support network for pupils across the School. The Committee gives pupils who feel they are being bullied, feeling homesick, struggling with work or making friends, a group of people who will listen to their concerns and offer advice and help where needed.Peer Support

The Committee is made up of Peer Support Leaders, Mrs Godfrey and Sam Durling Year 13, House Staff, teachers, Junior Prefects and over half the students in Nelson House. Later this term, Mrs Godfrey and Sonia Lei Year 13, will be visiting the Junior Houses, Blake and Drake, to further promote the Peer Support system.

All pupils can contact a Peer Support member at any time through email or they can seek them out by looking for the green circular badge that is worn by all Peer Support Mentors. The message is ‘everyone should remember that a problem shared is a problem halved, there is no need to bottle up your emotions at RHS because there are people here that are only too happy to help’.

With your sons very much being a part of the techno generation, I thought that the best way to touch base with you, as parents, was in a way much more fitting with the current social networking climate!  I have decided that the boys will take it in turns to blog about their experiences here, at RHS, for you to read about.  I will of course be keeping you up to date individually where necessary, but I thought you might like an insight into their everyday lives here at school.

Miss Celerier, Lower School Tutor

Miss Celerier, Lower School Tutor

Everything has started to settle down here as everyone gets back into the swing of things.  On the whole, the boys are doing well.  They have got stuck into their work and merits are flying my way frequently.  We have had a few missed pieces of prep but I am keeping on top of this and have spoken to the culprits.  In our tutor periods, we have been discussing time management and being resilient, both of which are essential to survive the fast-paced world at RHS!

The Year 7s are currently enjoying their Sailing taster weeks and have been eagerly telling me about who fell in or who forgot to watch out for the sail coming around!  A personal highlight from last week was the Drake house egg drop.  The Year 7 boarders were split into teams and given the task of protecting an egg, with limited resources and a small budget to buy more materials.  With the help of Mr Barraclough and the new Deputy Headmaster, Mr Dixon, the beautifully decorated and well protected eggs were ready for flight.  With the crowd eagerly awaiting the drop, the eggs were launched from the clock tower to varying degrees of success!

The older boys seem to have got used to life in Blake and are all getting stuck into their activities.  They have had some great results on the rugby field and have managed to pick up several merits which they should be very proud of, and Oliver Hurley has gained our very first Cause for Applause from Ms Wilby in Mathematics.

I saw the boys this morning, and you will all be glad to know that they are eagerly looking forward to spending some quality time at home this weekend.  I have managed to sign away my weekend to work.  I shall no doubt be seeing some of you at the Rugby 7s on Sunday, I’ll be at the one on the BBQ wearing a comedy apron and chef’s hat!

Hi everybody its Will Carter.  So far at RHS I have received 1 merit and I have been awarded my Academic Scholar badge.

Recently I played In the Under 13 rugby team against Coopers and Orwell Park.  I played alongside Max Orr who is also in Miss Celerier’s tutor group.  The last three weeks have been a good beginning, but have been hard work and very tiring!  Prep has been tough but has been a good way to stay focused.  The food has been extremely nice, the best part of all this was definitely the baked beans!!  My favourite lesson so far has been English because Mr Gould my teacher has made each lesson enjoyable as he is extremely funny.  I have enjoyed the first 2 weeks here at RHS, and have realised that I shouldn’t waste my time and make the most is this amazing school.

On Saturday 21 September, the Royal Hospital School held a Sailing and Raft-Building taster day for prospective pupils, at neighbouring Alton Water Reservoir.

The more experienced sailors went out in Toppers and RS Teras under the expert guidance of Director of Sailing, Andy Nutton. Enjoying a gentle breeze, they were taken through skills training and top tips, as well as some competitive racing. Those who were less confident, or who were trying sailing for the first time, took to the water in groups, each with their own instructor giving them a chance to try out both helming and crewing. After a morning of experiencing what it is like to be a sailor at the Royal Hospital School and a delicious barbecue lunch on the shore, the 10 and 11 year olds took part in a raft building competition. It was a battle of the sexes and clear from the start, that the girls had far superior knot tying skills than the boys! Unfortunately for the boys their raft barely survived being carried to the water’s edge while the girls’ held fast and they won the race.

The fun continued as everyone jumped off the jetty into the water to finish off a highly enjoyable day!

Coopers Coborn, RHS, RHS Rugby, rugby at the royal hospital school, success, the royal hospital school

Another busy week for the rugby players at RHS where they fought hard with some promising final scores.

rugby_ball_RHS

Midweek the Junior 1st XV overcame a spirited Holbrook Academy side 58-24. While the 3rds started their season with a typically classy display away at Framlingham, winning 35-7. Try of the game was by Manish Kala

On Saturday all the of games were played at home in a block fixture against Coopers Coborn.

The U13B won 22-12. TJ Robinson and Charlie Jenkins playing well and the U13A stepped up a gear from their midweek performance and won easily 38-10. Wing, Toyo Ogunlesi, gave an excellent performance cutting the opposition to pieces.

The U14Bs could not stop a few stand out players from Coopers and lost 46-7, though Scott Taylor played well. The U14A were not quite at their best but still won 33-19. Zac Puckey and Harry Pugh dominated the opposition with both pace and power.

At U15 level Coopers are the strongest side in Essex. The B team battled hard and tackled their hearts out but lost 33-12. Matt Saxby was named man-of–the–match. The A team lost 43-12 with several players unavailable to play. An improvement on the score last year.

The 2nds scored at will, demolishing a young Coopers side 73-3. As the score suggests RHS dominated all areas of play. Guest U16s Jessie Vogel and Lyam Thorpe both played excellent games.

The 1st XV won 34-0.  A fine well-worked move resulted in a try finished off by Dan Jones and saw the half-time score 5–0 .The second half saw RHS play with more confidence and the team were able to achieve a greater level of dominance. Wing, Toby Eaton, scored 3, there was another for Dan Jones and one for captain Dan Smith. Tom Miller kicked 2 conversions. A great home first win against a 2-term rugby school.

A final congratulations must go to Lyam Thorpe, Ben Kelland and Alex Rayment who have been selected for the Eastern Counties U16 squad.
