Joe Butterworth, a Sailing Scholar at the Royal Hospital School, has been selected for the 2012/2013 Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS).

TASS helps talented athletes to shine in education and sport by giving them the support they need to excel in both aspects of their career.

On the Scheme, sportsmen and women in higher or further education are nominated by their National Governing Body (NGB) and given a tailored package of sports coaching, physiotherapy, strength and conditioning training, lifestyle and education support and access to the TASS medical programme.

The programme is based on a partnership between athletes, eduction institutions and sports’ governing bodies. Working together ensures optimum performance all round by allowing the athletes to train and compete at their best while also preparing for life after sport.

The Scheme is backed by the government through the Department for Culture, Media and Sport and is managed on behalf of UK Sport by the charity SportsAid.

Perseverance is not a long race but many short races one after another

Following on from Mrs Pearson’s excellent chapel talk last week where she talked about success and failure, it got me thinking about the qualities one needs to overcome a setback – a failure in a test; a poor half term or end of term attainment grade. To me the quality that immediately springs to mind is perseverance.

School life is no different from real life: in order to succeed in the classroom, on the games field, or in music and drama we will all need, at some point, to show perseverance. Someone once said that perseverance is not a long race but many short races one after another. And that is how life is: attack each challenge one step at a time.

And what of achievement? Well, as I have said before, success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which have been overcome while trying to succeed.

In another excellent chapel address last week, Prof Ted Evans, of Gideons International, made reference to Abraham Lincoln’s bible being used at the inauguration of President Barrack Obama’s second term as President of the United States. Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster movie , “Lincoln” was released in the UK last Friday. I have not yet seen it or read any reviews; therefore, I do not know how faithful the film will be to Abraham Lincoln’s life. However, as well as being a lawyer from Illinois, just like Barack Obama, Abraham Lincoln was no stranger to the notion of perseverance. A Potted history of Abraham Lincoln’s career reads as follows:

  • Failed in business in 1831
  • Defeated for legislature in 1832
  • Second failure in business 1833
  • Suffered a nervous breakdown in 1836
  • Defeated for Speaker 1838
  • Defeated for Elector 1840
  • Defeated for Congress 1843 and again in 1848
  • Defeated for Senate 1855
  • Defeated for Vice-President 1856
  • Defeated for Senate 1858
  • Elected President 1860

Let this be a lesson to us all – perseverance is not a long race but many short races one after another.

Michael Stokes

Having already achieved a solo flight in an RAF glider, RHS pupil Michael Stokes applied for and has been accepted on to one of just 50 flying scholarship courses offered nationally by the RAF each year.

As a result, much of Michael’s Christmas holiday was spent at Tayside Aviation in Scotland learning how to fly the Grob Tutor.

After just under 11 hours of instruction, Michael was allowed to complete a 15 minute solo flight in what turned out to be poor weather, requiring him to fly some of the circuit on instruments.

In addition to the flying, Michael also had to pass an exam on Air Law, Airfield Operations, Emergencies, Navigation and Weather which he did with a commendable high score of 84%.

Michael’s course report rated him as either outstanding in a number of categories and said that ‘he showed very good potential as a future pilot’.

Congratulations to Michael – a great achievement for him and the Royal Hospital Schools’ Combined Cadet Force.

Charlotte Hunkin in British Eventing Life magazine

Charlotte Hunkin has been featured in this month’s British Eventing Life magazine. Charlotte is a key member of the School’s senior equestrian team and has represented RHS on many occasions.

The article focuses on training for success and “Shaping up for Eventing in 2013″. The article explains how British Eventing Training Days give you the chace to build up your confidence and hone your skills ready for the new season.

Charlie Hunkin has owned her five-year old Thoroughbred, Legs, since July. The pair have competed in one BE90 and hope to move up to BE100 next season. Charlie explained, ” I like the idea of these training sessions because I can practise technical fences like skinnies and corners before meeting them out on a cross-country course”.

England U19 v Ireland U19 - U19 ODI
Former RHS pupil and 1st XI Cricket Captain, Reece Topley, has been selected for next month’s England Lions (‘A’) One Day Tour of Australia.

The 18 year old left arm pace bowler is one of the youngest cricketers ever to be selected for the full England 2nd XI. The squad is captained by current Test Player, Joe Root, and possesses six England full internationals (James Taylor, Alex Hales, Danny Briggs, Scott Borthwick, Ben Stokes, and Joe Root). They will play five international matches against Australia ‘A’ at the MCG, Melbourne, SCG Sydney and at the Bluntstone Arena, in Hobart, throughout February.

Topley was delighted to hear of his selection on 23rd December. The former pupil said, “It was the best Christmas present I could have hoped for, I am so excited about this England Lions tour – the hard work over the last two years is certainly paying off, as not only have I become a much better ‘white’ ball bowler, but I have worked massively on my strength and conditioning”.

Topley who is approaching his third season as an Essex professional cricketer added, “I know I must continue to work hard in all aspects of my game but make the most of this opportunity in Australia. I know I shall be challenged on this One Day tour as this will be undoubtedly be a huge test for my bowling at some extremely fine Aussie batsman, but I cannot wait to start.”

This will be Topley’s third tour to Australia in the last nine mouths having recently performed so well at the Under 19 World Cup with England. He was acclaimed the ‘most complete bowler’ at the Tournament, the clear leading wicket-taker and, was nominated as the only Englishman in the selected Under 19 World XI.

We wish Reece every success in this tour and in his future playing career – Congratulations!
