Academic, Alistair Green, GCSE, Results, royal hospital school, Scholar

Academic Scholar Alistair Green, who joined the Royal Hospital School in Year 7, has achieved an excellent set of grades; 9A*s and 2As as well as an A in the free-standing higher level maths qualification, Additional Maths.

Alistair’s family are based in Portsmouth and his father is a Commander in the Royal Navy. As a result of his father’s job, Alistair and his family have had to relocate many times, particularly, while Alistair was at primary school. Before joining the Royal Hospital School he had attended three schools in less than a year and that was the time that Alistair’s parents decided that this was both unsettling and disruptive to his education. The Royal Navy recognise this can be a problem for services families who need to move with their jobs and as a result they can help by way of an allowance which enables the children to go to boarding school providing continuity to their education.

The family chose the Royal Hospital School for the balanced and full education it provides and also for the excellent pastoral care providing a stable and a nurturing environment. With these exceptional results Alistair will go onto to study Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Music in the Sixth Form at the Royal Hospital School. Well done Alistair.

Over the weekend the schools swimming pool was taken over by a fim crew filming Lisa Wynn in action over training for the Jenson Button Trust Triathlon.

Jenson, a Former F1 World Champion and current Vodafone McLaren Mercedes is hosting his first triathlon in aid of The Jenson Button Trust. A keen triathlete, Jenson has brought together two of his passions in what will prove a fun yet no doubt, highly competitive race. Vodafone have been putting together a promotional video for their website and includes focussing on three triathlete’s who have an inspirational story in terms of how they have made it this far in the build up to the triathlon.

Lisa, after overcoming a severe back injury, dealing with asthma and losing a lot of weight is one of these three in the limelight. The philosophy that Mclaren and Vodafone share is that when you work at improving one area then other areas of life or performance improve also, therefore taking part in a triathlon will improve your health and wellbeing as well as other areas of life.

BBC News at Lunch time today featured a picture that looked on to the 200 acre grounds of the Royal Hospital School as their backdrop today.
The topic was on a recent development regarding new rules on outdoor space for schools. Critics are worried that the new rules will make it easier for schools to sell off sports fields.
“Secondary schools in England previously had to provide pitches ranging from 5,000sq m to 54,000sq m, depending on the number of pupils. But schools must now provide only “suitable outdoor space” for pupils.” – BBC NEWS

It was with a deep feeling of sadness that I heard of the news of Carlo’s passing. I had known Carlo for some thirty years and we have kept in touch over this period of time. I first met him in the chapel of the Royal Hospital School when Michael Woodward brought him over to try the wonderful organ, an instrument he loved playing on his many visits to give recitals. He regarded it very highly and described the organ as one of the finest examples of English organ building in the country. This first meeting ignited a long lasting friendship and association.

I was immediately struck by his warm and generous personality as well as his sheer musical brilliance. He had a wonderful sense of humour as I can testify during many long and hilarious conversations we had over the telephone. Carlo certainly enjoyed communicating with people in the most engaging manner. He transfered this gift to the concert hall where he was able to hold thousands of his appreciative listeners in the palm of his hand.

I had the pleasure of listening to many great recitals both here and elsewhere and also experienced the privilege of performing duets with him on numerous occasions. The world has lost one of the truly great organists, entertainers and communicators of all time. Carlo will be greatly missed by all of us.

Peter Crompton – Director of Music

Minor Counties Cricket Festival comes to a close.

13 Monday Aug 2012

After a slow start due to our fantastic English summer the festival has ended on a high. Players, coaches and spectators say it has been a huge success after the kind weather allowed the teams to play some fantastic cricket. Teams came from all over the country including Glamorgan, Cumbria and Hertfordshire to name a few.

Apart from the U12’s matches it was not a competition, however due to the bad weather Buckinghamshire (who won by a single point) decided to share the tournament with Cumbria and Hertfordshire who closely followed behind. This was a clear indication that all teams that were involved were there for a more important reason other than competing. It was a time to meet and get to know people with the same passion and interest.

Along with awards being handed out to stand out players, everyone was blessed with the presence of an Olympic torch that was brought along by one of the players from Norfolk whose Grandfather had been involved in the relay. He also scored 52 runs today which is a fantastic achievement. Don Topley (Currently in Australia supporting his son in the U19’s World Cup) will release a more detailed account for the festival at a later date.
